VTHopHead (1513) - Seymour, Tennessee, USA - AUG 22, 2010
Sample at the 2010 VT Brewers Fest - Pours a clear black/brown in color with a small tan head that faded, but left some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is plenty hoppy... both citrus and pine... with a hefty amount of roasted malts, along with just a bit of chocolate and coffee. Flavor was the same... minus most of the hop flavors... and that was a bit disappointing. Still a decent black IPA though...

swoopjones (7020) - Buffalo, New York, USA - NOV 1, 2011
cask days 2011, less than intense roasted malt aroma, some c itrusy hop bitterness. Flavor was solid, not too roasty nor to bitter, a nice balance between the two. Pretty good

Volo Cask Days 2010
Aroma slight hint of soap , hop feel with hint of soy sauce ,dark malt ,cocoa , vanilla and licorice. 7+
Appearance clean ,easy flowing almost black in colour. Rocky mid top.3+
Flavor and Palate : Medium bodied. Frontal short bursts of dry roast followed by citrus hop profile. Mid presented with dark malts , hint of chocolate , licorice. Finish touch by dryness of alcohol.

Cask - Volo Cask Days 2010, Day 1 (session 2). With Stephen G ragging me non-stop in the background, I rate on. 60 IBUs. Mostly opaque ruby, clear around the edges, with an average frothy light brown head. Smells like a nice (non-syrupy) brown ale with a tad more than usual alcohol and oddly some salty tuna (???) and a hint of oak - some, but not much herbal bitterness. Taste is still quite malty and roasty, but in addition to the herbal bitterness, there is building low-level citrus zest bitterness as well - interesting, not entirely sure it’s a complete success. Slick, astringent, weakly carbonated, eventually develops near-IPA level hoppy bitterness, but still very roasty ..... I am still not sold on the "black IPA" concept.

lefossoyeur (615) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 29, 2011
Almost black with a small beige head. Nose is piney with a touch of roasty grainy malts. Light to medium body, lots of roast malts in there, average bitterness, sticky finish. Average black IPA.

Sammy (12768) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 7, 2009
Festival Bières et Saveurs 2009. This brewery rotates 50 recipes so I was happy to get the basics. A very decent stout, medium mouthfeel, a tad sour, with chocolate up front. Black without significant head. Roasty, and chocolate, aroma.

[3445-20101029] Cask. Fragrant fruity malt aroma has a mild oil paint and candy notes. Black body has medium brown bubbles. Cigarette bitter roasted fruit skins flavour. Medium body. Nice to sip.
(Cask Days @ Volo, Toronto, ON)
