Draft at the Berghoff. So how is 6% considered a strong ale? Anyway, Dark malt color with a thin head. Smell is malty and a little sweet, like molasses cookie dough. Nice thick mouthfeel from those sweet malts. Tends toward a doppelbock in character. A bit of plum. Malts are just toasty in spite of the darker color. A mostly German hop character. Filling and warming without extra alcohol. Slightly fruity ale finish with some graininess.
Dark pour, off white head which quickly disappeared. Malty aroma and flavor. Caramel. Kind of a weird finish. A little off putting. ARH (1135) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 25, 2015
On tap, poured into a stein. The aroma is sugary sweet initially and overwhelmingly, containing notes of toffee with a mellow undertone of blackberries. From there, the aroma turns towards citrus and bread crust with a primarily roast and toffee aroma near the end of the drink, as well as a light spice note. It pours oily and clear with a dark brown-amber hue and a frothy, soft, off-white head that retains a fuzzy surface, a medium thick ring, and lots of web lace. The taste is nedium sweet and medium bitter, but it’s more bitter forward. It’s creamy and slightly chewy in texture which turns sticky late. The medium full body has a soft carbonation and flavors of nuts, wood, toffee, and a light chocolate note. It’s crisp with fruit and light, dry spice finish with a nice warm undertone. A roast and toffee notes linger briefly. The aftertaste mellows and dries with astringent blackberry notes late. troyc (2869) - Illinois, USA - JAN 14, 2015
[Bottle] Light brown colored pour with low carbonation. Sweet and sticky nose of brown sugar and toffee. Sweet bready taste is pretty one dimensional. Little bitterness. Body is slightly below normal. OK I guess. milewide (2282) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - APR 29, 2014
Dark brown color with sweet carmel taste. Not much aroma. Alcohol well hidden. Some hops at end. cubs (10675) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAR 16, 2014
Bottle @ home, shared with LeninCat. Thanks to Adam for sending. Pours a deep ruby orange appearance with a thin tan head. Burnt sugar / caramel, dark fruits / raisin / plum in the aroma. Full bodied, thick molasses feel. Syrupy / gooey caramel / toffee flavor. High sweetness. Low to moderate bitterness. Some cookie like notes along with a bit of spicy hops. Finishes pretty smoothly. Not super impressive but not bad. LeninCat ticks this 3/5.

12pz bottle pours light toedi brown with off white head. Aroma is malt and some caramel and spices. The flavor is about the same aromatic malt with some spices and some caramel. Not a bad winter beer but not a good one either. Overall just decent. Niko100 (2966) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 7, 2013
Draft; Dark brown color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of caramel malt, fruit, & some spice; Flavor of malt, caramel/toffee, and some fruit; Decent. Lemke10 (987) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 12, 2013
This pours a dark brown color with a slight beige head. There is the scent of toasted malts, caramel, and toffee in the mix. The taste is pretty big and bold with lots of good toasted flavors. This is the first Berghoff beer I’ve had since the move from Minhas Brewery to the Steven’s Point Brewery and the change is amazing. This makes for a delicious drink on a cold winter day.
