From notes, on tap at Eastside. Pours out a nice creamy dark hue, balanced head, good lacing. Aromas are slightly boozy, but also really delicate cocoa. Palate is very light and the barrel aging dominates the entire palate. It’s a bit aggressive to use with a lighter style of beer such as a black and tan, and I think although a good idea, doesn’t mesh with the style. The rum is a bit sweet, but not bad.

Pint at Publicly House Brookline. Good aroma, bourbon, little chocolate and coffee. Clean Orangy brown color. Good head, faded to ring, spotty lace.sweet flavor. Lite body, smooth creamy mouthfeel, dry sweet finish. Ok, though I don’t think the brown ale holds up against the barrel..

Draft @ Sunset Grill and Tap. Alston, MA. Nice deep brown color, looks like murky muddy water. Thin small off-white head. Small spotty lace. Light bourbon oak nose. That’s about it even after it warms. Taste is porter like with borbon oak and a hint of vanilla. This years batch was absolutely more of a bourbon barrel rather than a rum barrel. Smooth and easy to drink for 6.8 percent. Would order again.

Sharp wood and malt aroma. Clear dark amber color with a small white head. Sweet beginning with a sharp middle that fades slowly in the finish.

Draft @ NotB. Amber pour wit some tan head. Aroma is slightly rum, vanilla chocolate and oak, definitely smells a bit like booze. Flavor is nutty malt and some chocolate, but no sign of the rum besides the warming.

A Sim rate (Extreme Beer Fest Night of the Barrels): Smells of sheer, sheer alcohol. Such a shame. Cloudy brown with a decent head. Again in the flavour it’s just loads of rum. There’s a bit of sweetness but I’m sure that’s just the rum. Coconut and nuts, but not great.

In short: A messy sweet fruity and sour dark ale with lots of rum. Ouch!
How: Tap at Boston Extreme Beer Fest 2010. Night Of The Barrel session.
The look: Cloudy amber-brown body topped by a short-lived small beige head
In long: Strange nose of rum and sourness. Ouch, we’re off to a bad start. Taste is a clash of flavors, with extra ripe fruits, rum, fruity sourness, caramel, red apples. Too sweet. This is a mess. At least it is not boring. I read that only 40 gallons were made of this “thing”. We need to get rid of it. I did what I could, now we need more volunteers to sacrifice themselves for the cause. Join the holy beer war, death to the infected, there is only one true brew, praise the glory of Allah-gash.

Rciesla (5499) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - MAR 3, 2010
Draft EBF NOTB. Pours an amber brune body with a yellow off white head. Boozy rum notes with bourbon, vanilla chocolate and oak. A bit nutty and boozy with other accents of lactose and coco. A decent BA porter.

Dickinsonbeer (5074) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - FEB 23, 2010
Sample at NOTB 2010. Pours a hazy almost murky amber brown with a thinning head fades to nothing. Aroma is a bit messy- lots going on- light chocolate and nuts, earth toast, leather, oak, vanilla, rum sweetness, caramel, and molasses with off spicy phenols and alcohol. Flavor is more big sweet rum, fruity esters, caramel malts, light chocolate or roast- just sweet with some earthy nutty tones and leather- messy and finish is dull and lifeless. Ech.

dogfish120love (1340) - Westfield, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 28, 2010
Consumed during a tasting event at Amherst Brewing. Only 40 gallons were produced, five of which were at the tasting. The aroma is heavily and predominantly rum, ameretto and cream. The rum from the barrels shines through the beer making it very sweet. There is no head what so ever and the color is a medium to light murky brown. Holy $$#% this tastes like rum
