You think you’ve tasted a robust stout? Think again! The Darkness is an incredibly dark and creamy beer that will overwhelm the palate with loads of dark chocolate and coffee flavours.

32 oz growler from the brewery, purchased on March 1, 2013. Black, small head. Malted barley aroma a little sweet, with notes of cocoa. Barley taste more full-bodied, with notes of sweet red fruit, dry bitterness. A very solid stout!

My Bottom Line:
This chewy Stout delivers plenty of malty comfort, filled with rich melanoidins, dark chocolate, tobacco and molasses.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A steady sheet of foam decorates the blackness.
-Carbonation is a tad prickly, but there are plenty of round malts to soften the mouthfeel.
-Drinkability is high.
-Some berry fruitiness appears in the nose.
-The finish has a nicely subtle acidity that stems from the meeting of fruity esters and roasted malts.
-Aftertaste is a bit charred and bitter.

Can.

Pours a very dark brown and almost boack with a medium brown head that leaves pretty nice lacing. Nose is of roasted malt, oatmeal, chocolate. Taste is not too sweet and offers more oatmeal flavors and roasted malt. Some chocolate and coffee. Almost ashy but it’s not. Body is on the lighter side, carbonation moderate and mouthfeel is pretty smooth. Overall a pretty tasty oatmeal stout but it has no real distinctive qualities.

Can (473 ml) at home. Black with a medium beige head, decent retention, leaving some lacing. Aroma is of dark chocolate, ashes, roasted malts, coffee and some herbalness. Taste is also of dark chocolate with bitter chocolate, coffee, ashes, some herbalness, light acidity and moderate bitterness. Medium body. Medium carbonation. A bit oily mouthfeel. Roasty finish with dark chocolate aftertaste. Nothing special here. A decent stout with dark chocolate aplenty that is a bit rough around the edges. Ok.

On tap. Dark brown, almost black body, medium dense foam with good retention. Potent aroma of roasted malts, burned toast, herbs, molasses and hints of coffee. Taste is very robust as well, with lots of burned malts, bitter herbs, chocolate and soy sauce. Very nice.

Pours an average size head and has a pitch black appearance. Pretty good lacing. Some fairly strong coffee, cocoa and nutty aromas. Very welcoming. Flavours are very much of dark chocolates and coffee, dark roast orentied. Lots of mocha, roasted malts and oats also noticeable. Mouthfeel has a mild warming sensation, also pretty smooth. Pretty good stuff.

Pours a large brown, frothy lasting head atop an opaque black body. Nose of molasses and burnt brown sugar, red wine and ash. Flavour is mildly tart, sweet milk chocolate and soya sauce. Very tasty though it seems thin through the palate. A nice stout.

[Mini-growler c/o Big Red] Pours a very dark amber-brown with an average size lasting frothy light-brown head. Lovely aroma of roasted malt, nuts, chocolate, leafy hops, lactic notes and a bit of coffee. Flavour of roasted malt, coffee & chocolate first followed by leafy hops, nuts and a moderate bitter finish. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Medium bodied. Fantastic stuff.

[7080-20150228] Growler. Roasted grainy malt aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting foamy tan head. Roasted woody malt and coffee grinds flavour. Full body. Good. (7/3/7/4/16) 3.7
