COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mules, known long ago as “Hayburners”, were the workhorses behind the construction of the Erie Canal. This IPA is equally dependable, and is extremely satisfying at the end of a hard day’s work. Hayburner is a luscious and citrusy IPA, with primary notes of orange, melon, grapefruit, and a slightly earthy finish. It packs a firm bitterness but remains balanced by abundant late hop additions and a soft, airy malt base.

Finally getting a backlog review entered for this fine offering from Buffalo - from the can this poured a paler yellow color with a fair amount of cloudiness, not quite what I would expect for either a standard West or East Coast IPA, but then still has a classic true-to-style tropical grapefruit hoppy aroma. Medium-bodied with more grapefruit hops in the flavor. Although the overall palate and bitterness are on the lighter side of the IPA spectrum and the bitterness does not seem too harsh, I could see how a non-hophead may really feel the "kick" on the palate. Flavor is otherwise citrusy (without any tartness) and with a well-balanced malty contrast. The grapefruit citrus profile is perhaps a bit generic as far as IPAs go, and there's nothing to this brew that would distinguish it or makes it stand-out, but that being said it's still well-done and enjoyable, and something I would drink again! As featured in episode 12 of the South Carolina Beer Scouts Podcast!
