COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the silver medal winner in the Brown Porter division of the 1996 Great American Beer Festival. The mash temperature is higher to produce body and mouth feel. The 2-row barley base, in addition to a combination of chocolate and carastan malts, gives this beer a smooth, round character with chocolate undertones. Many people who normally don’t drink dark beers will drink this beer.

From draft flight at Ram Columbus on June 22, 2017. Opaque brown hue, good roasted malt/chocolate nose, flavor like the nose with a smoke-like note but overall just too light.

On tap at brewpub at University Village in Seattle. Pours nearly opaque black with brown highlights and a trace creamy light-tan head and lacing. Aroma: molasses and coffee, which is pleasant. Flavor: the above, plus dark and milk chocolates. Mouthfeel: light- to medium-bodied with some creaminess (use of oats?), yet a little too thin for the style.

A pretty standard porter. Lots of dark chocolate and hints of coffee linger. Tried after HILT in 2016 in Indianapolis.

Draft at source. Aroma of chocolate and light coffee. Light cocoa. Deep brown to black pour. Small light brown head. Taste is all chocolate, bordering on bakers chocolate to a dark Hershey chocolate. Medium mouthfeel with modest carbonation. Not bad.

Drinking it on draft at the RAM. APPEARANCE- super dark, but not black. Light head laces well. NOSE- roasty malt, chocolate scents create an allure for my mouth as I prepare to drink this black beauty. FLAVOR- also nicely roasty and slightly chocolaty. Little bit of bitterness to balance the sweetness. NOTES- nicely done porter.
