October 28, 2012 - 8th Annual Volo Cask Days. Cloudy variegated amber pour, average off-white foamy head. Smells GREAT - juicy, floral, tropical fruit, resin, weed - smells like frickin’ TF Dreadnaught - no way that is an ESB, it’s in IPA/DIPA. Taste isn’t quite as citrus-like, less resin, a lot of floral character, not much alcohol - solid balance, very appropriate for cask. Thick, still mouthfeel, a little airy, slick, not astringent, longish vaguely sweet floral finish. Terrific beer - ESB? - whatever. Sammy (12995) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 29, 2012
On cask at Cask Days 2012, 5.9% and 50 IBU. A decent cask beer that hits the style and emits hop aromas. A bubbly head on a golden body. Decent drinkability. reebtogi (6403) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - AUG 23, 2012
A couple of samples at VCBW 2012 pours a pale amber color with a finger of white head that leaves very little lacing. Light caramel and citrusy hop aromas. Taste is light citrusy hop bitterness with a caramel malty sweetness. Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty tasty brew that fits the style. Minty, soapy, grassy and citrus notes to the hop forward aroma. Hazy browned copper body is topped by a low white fully diminishing head. Under attenuated and very sweet with cereal and toasty malts. Nicely balanced bitterness. Medium body with low carbonation. Cask not quite ready perhaps? Sampled on cask at Dix Mardi Gras 2007. Oakes (19406) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - FEB 17, 2007
Cask, at Dix
Golden-amber, some haze. Bizarre aroma - what are those phenols? I get some plastic, then some smoke...thankfully this dissipates a bit but it does remain until the end. There is also cinnamon, and a nice toasty, marmaladey character. The carbo is quite low, but fine for a cask bitter. So yes, a toasty malt accent with soft caramel and marmaladey hops. Finishes fairly sweet and the palate is uniform throughout. Nice, refreshingly bitter, good balance.
