This copper beauty has a creamy off-white head with splendid hop and malt aroma. This Extra Special Bitter has a flavour that is rich, smooth, and balanced. Kissing the palate with malt and a dry hop finish, pleasantly holding until your next sip.

Draught at the brewpub
Amber color, creamy head. The aroma has quite good hops, fruity, mild. Good toffee flavor, medium body structure, strong hopping, well aromatic, oily, a bit fruity and resiny too. Long final, in which the nutty bitterness rises. Finally, a beer in this pub showing some good hops.

UPDATED: JUN 1, 2014 On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a hazy copper with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out smooth toffee, light English hops, and biscuity notes. Flavour brings out a mix of toffee, vegetal notes, and biting English hops. Dry, someway spicy and lightly astringent on the finish. Smooth and highly drinkable, despite the smidgeon of vegetal notes. Good stuff.

Copper colour. Fruity-hoppy aroma (blackberry, cherry) with a hint of toasty malt. Palate shows woody hop flavours and a moderate, appetizing bitterness. The woody finish is long rather than dry.

Lubiere (14262) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 27, 2006
Hazy dark amber ale with a thin light moka head. Nice bready malt with smooth floral hops and treacle notes in aroma. In mouth, smooth caramel malt light lingering bitterness from hops, with citrus notes and a meium body. A good ESB. Merci, JM!

From a 650 ml bottle, thanks BeerPrince. Dark amber-orange coloured with a thin yellow head. Light crystal malt and a touch of sweet aroma. Light woody hops and an overpowering celery salt aroma. Flavour is pretty bland and quite vegetal. Perhaps better at the brewery, but this bottle is quite poor.

A couple of samples at VCBW 2012 pours a light brown color with a small white head that leaves some nice thin lacing. Aroma is light floral hops and mild caramel. Taste is a pleasant hop bitterness with a caramel malty sweetness. Light to medium body with good carbonation leaving a nice tickle on the tongue. Overall, an enjoyable bitter with a nice balance of flavors.

On draught at the Big River Brewpub south of Vancouver, BC. Pours a clear copper amber brew with a creamy white head that has a nice retention and spotty lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, some dry grassy hops and a hint of toffee. Taste is medium bodied, some carbonation with flavors of dry caramel malt, some roasted nuts and mild grassy hops. Finish is slightly dry with a mild bitter aftertaste that quickly disappears.

Excellent, one of the best brews from Big River. Tried this one at a beer festival and would like to visit the pub and have one there. I will update my notes when I do. At the festival I wrote down that the Big River ESB is strong in both malt and hop arenas, thus creating a lovely taste sensation that is balanced through and through. I’d like for more local brewpubs to make good ESB.

CapFlu (5132) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 29, 2006
(Draught) Sampled on November 23rd, 2006 at the brewpub. Thin white foamy head with a deep orange body. Great full aroma and a ctirus hoppy nose. More like an EPA? Same English malt base with a very smooth texture. Low pressure creamer tap pours a lovely head and texture. A VERY drinkable ale and due for higher ratings!
