Magic Resides Where Grape and Grain Collide
Balanced like a luminous bubble upon the delicate wire betwixt the grape and grain, Big Rock’s effervescent new experiment will book your taste buds on a glamorous cruise into exciting new waters. Legend tells of a Belgian brewer who, in one of those magical moments when luck fuses gleefully with genius, blended the gentle sweet snap of grape with the robust sensuousness of a young ale. Big Rock has captured that golden moment of eureka with its exciting new Druivenbier – Flemish for ‘grape beer’. Glistening Pinot Gris grapes have been plucked from the warm bosom of Therapy Vineyards on the Naramata Bench near Penticton, BC. These grapes were then introduced to a sophisticated blend of three of Big Rock’s finest malts. This is a true Druivenbier – rarely seen in North America, and uncompromisingly elegant to the last puckish bubble.

[6086-20131129] Bottle. Mild toasted mossy aroma. Clear, pale orange body with a quick foamy white head. Sweet corn mash flavour has a bittersweet floral yeast aftertaste. Medium body. Interesting. (6/3/7/3/14) 3.3

Visual: Pours copper pale orange (Welch’s white grape juice) with minimal head, a very thin layer of retention, a bit of lacing, lots of steady evenly spaced streams. Nose: musky liquid barley malt (aka Malt liquor), medium bright grape juice, apple juice. (lvl-7)-pungency Attack: juice-like sugars, sweet-crisp Mid-palate: thickish viscosity, (lvl-7)-long sweetness, (MAIN) malt liquor, barley, fruity white grape, liquid malt sweetener. Finish: tamed acidity, light sour/tangy, more barley malt, a touch of bitterness, malty sweet finish. Summary: Drinks like a white grapey Colt 45, but with sweetened almost artificially. Can’t say I loved this one bit it is decent when properly chilled and straight out of the bottle.

A golden amber ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with doughy character, signs of oxidation, sad. In mouth, a sweet fruity malt light white grape, lightly oxidized, grapeskin astringency, watery, disappointing. Bottle at brothers beer bistro.

Pours golden-orange with an average size frothy white head. Aroma of grapes, caramel malt, grain and light herbal notes. Flavour is sweet and malty along with grapes -- simple but nice. Medium bodied. Very champagne like. Not my type. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A 750 ml bottle from Legacy Liquor in Vancouver. A medium amber-orange beer with a frothy white head which collapses quickly. Not much nose, though faintly sweet. I rather like the taste. Just enough grain amidst the grapes to remind one that this is a beer, not, say, Baby Duck. Eminently drinkable, but not great. Cheers!

A nice, but not complex blend of grape & sweet tastes with grassy big rock ale. Enjoyable but sadly like most big rock brews, good but not great.

Bottle, shared with Grippitis and Parksy. Medium gold, average white head. Sweet pale malts, with a playdough note that I’m learning is Big Rock signature yeast. Simple sweet white grape juice and pale malt, not quite shandyish, but just a few steps away. I love these Alchemist brews for the new life they bring to this brewery... Just not a fan of this particular one.

Rating this from memory - shared a bottle of this a few weeks ago. Aroma of light fruits - mostly white grape - and some grainy notes. Pretty sweet taste with a nice carbonation. Flavours of mostly white grapes, white wine, some cereals and yeast. Simple, yet different. Interesting brew from Big Rock.
