3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Debut tapping at the Beer Bistro. Orangey and slightly cloudy, poured in a shaker glass. Has a short, whitish head. The nose has some decent Pacific Northwest hops to it. And I also get some of the malt. Very sharp and bitter hop taste to it. Malts are a little bit light. Rich, the founder says he wanted it to be a hop-forward since he thinks that’s what Chicago beer geeks like. Possibly since this is a fresh batch, it’s just naturally more hoppy. Another big-on-hops IPA.
Perhaps this beer doesn’t like being in a bottle for a while or mine is old. Massive head on this thing that’s usually a sign of a beer that’s gone bad. But it doesn’t taste as astringent as other beers I’ve had with abnormally high carbonation. Lots of pine and citrus rind, super-dry with almost no malt sweetness. Not horrible, but definitely not good. csaso (2284) - Missouri, USA - OCT 1, 2015
Bottle - good size foamy head, dark straw color, big citrus and pine hop aroma and flavor, mild malt backbone, mild bitter finish, not a bad IPA overall

Bottle. Pours a clear amber gold with a HUGE foamy white head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has lots of musty grass with a bit of pine and earthy grains backing. Flavor has lots of grains and bread with a bit of grass and an earthy pine note. Finhead (1761) - OFallon, Illinois, USA - AUG 18, 2015
Clear golden pour with a n offwhite head. The aroma has citrus and pine hops. It has a medium body with average carbonation. The taste is mildly bitter with a quick finish. Frank (4194) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUL 31, 2015
This was nearly a gusher for me so, you know, if it’s close to August 2015 and you get a bottle of this, open it over the sink. It pours very cloudy orange w/ a huge rocky head that fills the hole glass and necessitates some patience to get the full bottle in the glass. It smells nice. It’s mildly piney w/ some softer citrus tones and a bit of pineapple It’s dry and bitter and seems like it’s full bodied aside from being way over-carbonated. I am not sure if this picked up a bit of an infection or what but I have to assume something is off here. Still, I have to give it a lot of credit for still being a decent beer despite this.

Bottle in Chicago-- Pours hazy pale amber with thin white head. Nose is grassy hop and honey. Aromas are skunk, citrus, pine and honey. Oily texture, average carbonation. Nice bitterness. Long bitter finish.

Horrible ipa. Should be classified as a Belgium Ipa. Has that banana fruity flavor with an unbalanced malt backbone. Finishes fruity and sweet. Pours a nice cloudy orange color. Had at home out of a bottle

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home watching playoff basketball on the last Sunday of April. Appearance is a cloudy golden brown with a thin white head. Aroma is malt and spice, rye, doesn’t smell like an IPA. Taste is strange, lots of off flavors going on and this doesn’t taste much like an IPA. Not a fan. prandlesc (1) - - OCT 20, 2014 does not count
Rather disappointing. I think this is Big Shoulders’ flagship brew. It smells good, and looks okay - but that’s where it ends. The flavor is just okay, and the mouthfeel is poor - really watery. I’ll avoid this one going forward. miyauchi38 (1096) - chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 14, 2014
