Can into glass. A more mild aroma than a typical IPA with some notes of coffee. Pours black with off white head. Taste is medium to heavy bitter. Smooth texture with a bitter finish. Might be my new favorite IPA. ConJoJohn (30) - Halifax, Nova Scotia, CANADA - MAY 21, 2017
I’m not a fan of black IPAs, but I’m digging this. I found Big Spruce’s IPA to be surprisingly fruity and mild, and the same goes for this brew. The nose is crisp and piney (with light citrus notes), certainly living up to the minimalist/naturalist vibes of Big Spruce’s general aesthetic. The beer pours hella dark -- like dank as balls brown. A little transluscent in the right light, but I’m digging the colour. Nice head, which dissipates with some latticing. The taste is very forward in citrus flavours, leaving behind a piney finishg. Nothing too special, pretty standard IPA stuff. As previously mentioned, though, the mildness works in this drink’s favour. The balance between hops and malts is pleasant. Would probably pick this over most other black IPAs I’ve had. deyholla (12676) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - OCT 3, 2016
Sampled from the tap at Maxwell’s Plum. Pours a clear amber brown with a tan head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a combination of pine and grass supported by dark grains. Flavor has a nice pine and dark grains combination with some resin supporting. solidfunk (9797) - Washington D.C., Washington DC, USA - OCT 26, 2015
Great black IPA. Pours black with good head and lacing. Good roast, good citrus infusion. Bitter finish. Well done. Cask Days.

Keg at Maxwell’s Plum. It poured opaque dark brown with a small light tan head. The nose is sweet, rich, sweet chocolate, toasty caramel, creme brulee and vanilla. The taste is rich roast, ashy, charred wood, dark chocolate, earth, tobacco and light vanilla and peppercorns with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very punchy. On tap @ Stillwell. Cola brown body, beige head. Very hoppy nose, mostly pine/conifer, maybe some citrus. Big hoppy palate too, pine and white grapefruit that mask dark malts. Long bitter finish. Very fresh. Spab (4311) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 2, 2014
On tap at Maxwell’s Plum. Pours a dark brown with orange edges and good-sized, lasting tan head that laces nicely. Aroma is a nice mix of roasted malt and citric hops. Flavour has a solid citrusy/earthy hop character that pairs nicely with a roasted chocolate maltiness. Body is lighter than I might have anticipated. Gentler black IPA but intensely drinkable. johnnnniee (4459) - Bedford, New Hampshire, USA - JUL 17, 2014
On tap at The Maxwells Plum in Halifax
Roasty rich coffee and chocolate with lots of earthy citrus and pine to back it up.
