Black, no head, gravity dispense
Aroma of dark malts, ginger, no roast, gingerbread, simple
Taste of dark malts, sweet ginger, touch savoury, no roast, quite simple
Palate - Medium body, light sweet. Finish as main flavour
Overall - Maybe gravity dispense didn’t do this beer justice
Cask at the Magpie, deep dark red-black with a lingering mid-coarse crema and aromas of giner and coffee. Palate is roasty malt with a notable but very well judged and balanced ginger character. Touches of coffee and red fruit, and a light earthy bitterness. Lovely. Beese (3296) - Watford, Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - DEC 9, 2013
Cask at the Watford Beer Festival 2013. Poured a very, very dark ruby with a thin, tan head. Aroma of root ginger, roasted malt and molasses. Pretty full mouth feel. Liquorice flavour initially with notes of treacle and fiery ginger. Palate was coffee, burnt sugar, light spice and dark fruit. Nice effort; the ginger had put me off trying this variant in the past, however it was subtle and tasted like actual ginger, rather than the sugary, crystallised stuff. vipinvelp (4580) - Velp, NETHERLANDS - NOV 7, 2013
Black with small light brown foam head. Aroma is coffee dominated. taste is bitter coffee, some chocolate tones, indeed some ginger. Lasting bitter aftertaste. (Reading 201311) mR_fr0g (14019) - Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - NOV 7, 2013

Tasted this in the Three Judges, Glasgow in August 2013. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear black in colour with ruby highlights and a thin, creamy buff head. Aroma has notes of Idris Ginger Beer and dusty black malt. Good lacing throughout and has a thin but creamy mouthfeel. Dark malts gives a roast grain base flavour with burnt black toast and root ginger notes. Hop resins impart a black peppery flavour to the dusty, resiny aftertaste which compliments the fire in the malt. Finish is dry with burnt cereal husks evident in the malt edged taste. An unusual stout but not one for a session though. JK54B (1602) - Helsinki, FINLAND - FEB 11, 2013
Cask Ale tasted at Gallows Bird RAF. Coffee and slight ginger in the nose. Low head. Dark black reddish color. Soft malty and slightly sour taste with some hints of ginger. Full filled. A very nice beer. Erasmus_ro (3235) - Alabama, USA - JAN 26, 2013
Cask @ Gallows Bird RAF 2013. Pours a dark brown. Aroma is loads of ginger, not unpleasantly so fortunately. It’s stingy as ginger should be, but not medicinal. Some roast there as well. Taste is a lot of ginger with some coffee and roast. Again, you can detect the ginger’s spiciness and sting, but it’s not unpleasant. Turns quite malt bready on the finish. Palate is medium. Cask at Gallow’s Bird real ale festival. Black with small head. Sharp herbal notes in aroma, not much of ginger here at first. Instead the ginger appears instantly in the taste and quite strong for that matter. Later on as well some ginger in aroma. Some notes of bitter chocolate in aftertaste. rosenbergh (11931) - Tampere, FINLAND - JAN 25, 2013
Cask at the Gallows Bird XVI Real Ale Festival, Espoo, Finland.
Dark reddish brown colour with small light tan head.
Ginger and toasted malt... and ginger... and ginger in aroma. Flavour is more balanced with roasted malt, some hops and ginger. There's some swimming pool in aroma too. Balanced.
