Taste thanks to out neighbor at Tired Hands release. Poured dark brown amber with fine beige head. Aroma of apples and slight funk. Slight sour taste with fruitiness. Quite smooth.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Redwood City, California. Lovely winey sour grape aroma, hints of sweetness, plum, some light balsamic vinegar notes. An extremely lively reddish brown beer with a big light tan head that took quite some time to dissipate. Tastes of spiced plums, tart grapes and apples, with a lingering lactic tartness.

i tried it as Monks Cafe... the aroma is fruity and winy with hints of sour berries, plum, yeast, sour apple and some spices... the taste is sour and sweet with notes of red wine, sour plum, berries, candy and sour citrus... sour and sweet aftertaste...

A delicious, complex Flemish sour. It pours dark brown with average foam. The aroma is tart, rich, and malty. Dark fruit notes and a tangy punch blend together really well in the aroma. The flavor is great, the sourness hits on the front of the tongue, and the finish is great combination of warm, sweet malt and pungent tartness. Apple, red wine, and brown sugar are woven throughout the end of the sip. Just really tasty.

As Monks Cafe Flemish Sour Ale, bottle. Pours dark red with high off-white head. Aroma is fruits, cherry, strawberries, raspberry, berry sugar, vanilla, cream, plums, some currant, different wild berries, light sourness. Taste is sour, dry, berries, cherry, red currant, cream, some sugar, strawberry, sweet grapes, plums, juice, light bitterness, very light acid. Super beer!

November 25th, 2014 - As it is known by its American name, the Monks Cafe Flemish Sour Ale is a relatively ubiquitous beer nowadays in beer stores, upping the Belgian presence, and claiming shrinking shelf space for its home country back in Europe. A good thing, too, since the monotony of San Diego IPAs is best dispelled with a little Belgian magic. And so it seemed like a spell when I poured out the Monks Cafe into a glass, producing a deep, deep brown colored brew, and on top, a wonderfully symmetrical top of espresso colored foam. The construction quality on the head made it hard to get a good sniff of the brew, but it is definitely tangy in nature, with a touch of orange brightness. The palate is light, giving me a generous sensation of the curious blend therein. I find sweet, tangy and woody, all dancing in a somewhat chaotic balance, with a tepid cherry note appearing near the aftertaste. "Kind of woody, kind of weird" I write in my tasting notes. This bottle might have been a bit off, but not so much that I wont try this again, and maybe with a little aging to take the last layer of awkward rawness away.
