Black color; small head, not persistent. Mild roasted malt and wet cardboard aroma, very light alcohol. The body is not too strong; reasonable chocolate and roasted malt flavor, quite sweet, but also with a strange feeling of brown sugar that is not very much appreciated. Low bitterness; the final is not very exciting, there is just some sweet chocolate and traces of mild coffee. Too simple. Note - this was a real ale, I dont know if the bottled version is bottle-conditioned, and whether this should be split into 2 entries. According to the brewer (who was phoned up while we were in the pub - now thats service for you! - the real ale version has been aged in the barrel for an additional 6 months.
Black, loose frothy head - perfect! Blackcurrent aroma, a touch
acidic. Some black olive al forni (those gently roasted olives).
Carbonation low, and palate smooth. Theres a touch of butteriness
there, to a level that I like. Very rich roasty body. Spicy christmas
chocolate. This is good. Its just starting to get tired, but still a good beer, and presumably a stunner at its peak.
Rerate: 330ml bottle - 10% (Johny’s, Rome)
Sweet chocolatey coffee aroma. Smooth palate, not quite slick, but
certainly very smooth. Very full roast, residual sugars pretty high.
Covers the 10% amazingly - I could get through a pint of this very
easily. Coffee subtle, heading towards more chocolate than coffee, and
the hops are a welcome addition - they’re amazinglybuddy considering
how old they must be. HOwever, they onl come out in the late finish.
Bottle @ Johnny’s Off License, Rome. Pours black with a small creamy beige head and lacings. Nose is roast, soy and dark fruit. Medium and smooth body. Lots of dry roast and a bit of ashes and soy. Sticky palate. Very nice Theis (15152) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - JUN 9, 2010
