Pours cloudy deep golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, yeast and anise. Taste is medium sweet and light to medium bitter with a long sweet, rather bitter, anise finsih. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle from Domus Birrae, a year old. Pours a slightly hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is really nothing extraordinary. Aromatic malts which makes it lean towards a belgian tripel, some light fruitiness. Peaches, apricots, something along those lines, with a citrus zest sort of freshness to it. It is quite different on the tongue than the nose gives away, the zesty character comes through more, it’s actually kind of sour, but not in a lambic sort of way. Still heavy on the fruitiness, though. A little bit spicy, almost peppery in the finish, along with a sweetness that leaves it a bit.. shit, don’t know the english word for it. It’s sweet in a dull, limp way, where I felt it should be crispier and drier in the finish. Light bodied, quite sparsely carbonated. Could have done with a tad more fizz. All in all though, this was both interesting and drinkable.

A fine Tripal, the fruit does not stick out prominently. Spices - white pepper, grain. (Bottle at Beer Enthusiast launch)

Bottle in Rome from Domus Birrae. Hazy amber beer, little white head. Light semi dry palate with fine carbonation. Nice fruity flavours here.Tinned peaches, blood orange. Mild minerals. Dry finish. Nice!

Head gone in secs, leaving a well-carbonated, dirty-orange beer. Spicy and fruity nose, preserved orange and frying oil aromas. Tastes like a bitterish, watery orangelemonade. Like a health- or home-made version of bitter orange softdrink (if it weren’t for the alcohol, something for the unhappy kids of ’green’ parents?) It does taste quite natural, no doubt there. Alcohol retronasal, with some faint wood. After some time, I get a almost hidden muscatel flavour. Very spritzy, but the alcohol prevents it from being really refreshing. Thinnish body. Not sure I like this overmuch. But it sure is something original as a drink. Grazie, Lorenzo!

Tasted 2010 edition, 75cl bottle. Still young, the moscato grapes leave their aroma and a sweet taste, low carbonation. Aging will probably give a great beer as 2009.

Ma come mai non la avevo votata, ma sarò un pirlot, è forse stata la più bella scoperta del laboratorio di Montebirra.
