Chestnut mild ale. Chestnuts are a unique brewing ingredient in Italy. Eataly Birreria’s Wanda is a moderate dark traditional mild ale with hints of roasted chestnuts.

Aptly chestnut brown body, topped with an airy, bubbly head providing full cover. I can’t really tease at any chestnut smells, though the aroma has some mustiness to it. Smooth body, gently bitter and with woody and tannic malty qualities. Smooth roast with perhaps a dash of chestnut.

Draft back in August ’14 (just found the notes). Dark amber pour, tan head. Nose is nutty grain. Bitter. Middle is crushed nutshells, and herb bitterness. Finish shows a slight quinine like bitterness.

Interesting cask pour at this rooftop brewpub. Nicely nutty flavors with a decent mellowing malt. Unexpected crisper finish. My fist chestnut ale.

Cask at Birreria at Eataly, NYC, 24/11/13. Opaque dark mahogony brown with a good sized off white head that retains well. Nose is lightly smoked malt, dark fruits, brown bread, hint of soap, spice, figgy jam, nutty. Taste comprises dark fruits, light toffee notes, brown bread dough, figs, tarte fruit skins, pinch of spice, nutty twang. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, hint of fruity bitterness in the finish. Ok stuff, a little soapy.

Draught @ Birreria: This one poured a ruby tinged chestnut brown color. It has a bit of an off-white head that leaves a little lacing. An interesting nose. Definitely a whiff of chestnuts. Some sweet malts also. The taste is good. Body was a hair lighter than I expected. A little yeasty and bready, hints of the chestnuts, malts. Interesting and definitely worth having a second one.
