UPDATED: OCT 4, 2012 Bottle at ACBF 2011. Hazy brown to black murky pour. Aroma is funky, earthy, roasty, yeasty and with some coffee. Flavor is yeasty, roasted malts, smooth and with low carbonation. Quite earthy. Infected?

Re-rate at the 4th BBF @ De Molen. Dark brown pour, coffee, roasted, smooth caramel in the aroma. Flavor is ashy, roasted, slightly sharp and a bit thin but with great balance. Nice brew. Definitely something completely different than last time I tasted it.

Magnifique bouteille de 330 ml obtenue via Importations Privées Bièropholie. Arôme: Odeur de chocolat avec une pointe de café et de mélasse. Apparence: La couleur est noire opaque. Présence d’un mince col beige mousseux et d’une fine dentelle sur le verre. Saveur: Goût de café avec une pointe fruitée et de chocolat. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Le corps est moyen. 1/15/11. Bottle shared at the Sea Bass tasting. Mild roasty aroma with nice sweet malt aspects coupled with roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee. Nice!

Tasted at the big “SeaBass has got to go” tasting. Pours mahogany with light colored mocha head. The aroma is dusty malt balls mixing with black strap molasses, some regular molasses and dark roasted malts. The taste is similar with fully dark roasted malts that get a bit astringent and moving toward black licorice and black strap molasses creating spiciness and rich sweetness together. Lovely 330 mL bottle acquired in trade with SlovakSniper. (Thanks, Pat). Typical IS colour with a small brown head. There is a hint of the peppers in the aroma, yet it is not a vegetal scent like you get in some. More spicy/hot. Is not strong though. Rather, the nose, and the flavour, are dominated by black coffee. In the flavour, the peppers don’t really appear ’til the finish, when you feel them more than taste them. App.: Deep brown-black with a large, greyish-mocha head.
Aroma: Very deep, rich dark chocolate and black coffee, a bit ashen with some green, coniferous notes, molasses, a touch of lighter chocolate and vanilla, a touch of dark dried fruits and maybe a bit of caramel/toffee?, a touch brothy, heavy on the black coffee, pretty good.
Palate: Medium body (thinner than expected) with fairly lively but elegant effervescence.
Flav.: Lots of black coffee with some dark chocolate, grape juice, a bit of molasses, some licorice, other vague fruitiness, some alcohol, a bit of green hoppiness, still a bit ashen and a touch brothy, decent; Dry with fair bitterness, decent mouth-coating, a somewhat alcoholic finish of slightly fruity, stark dark-roasted malts.
The flavour was a bit less nice than the nose. Overall, a fairly respectable Impy Stout.
My first stout from Italy- very cool.
A- Body appears to be a dark brown, nearly black hue-but when held up to the light it glows and murky translucency comes forward. Pours with a 1/2 finger milky head.
S- Dark chocolate is dominant with very faint chili in the nose and a mild roasted malt background that gives off the impression of coffee.
T- Initial flavor is mild and offers cocoa, smoke, and roasted malt with a very faint accent of chili. The flavors intensify for the finish but remains pretty consistent all the way through-with roasted malt and chocolate being the highlights.
M- Carbonation is low and body is moderately thick.
D- This is a very good, easy to drink brew overall. The chili and spice are very faint all the way through and provide a nice compliment to the chocolatey stout in the background. This is a classy, not over the top, well done brew.
