2.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Rated from counter pressure filled bottle. Aroma of flowers, nuts and soy sauce combined - not the best. Flavor was a little heavy on the whiskey and caramel for my tastes. Mouthfeel a bit thick. Way too much going on in this beer for my tastes...I’d say this was not as good as I was hoping for...
Sweet malty aroma has strong whisky, vanilla, charred wood and roasty notes to it. Opaque brown body with ruby highlights is topped by a low, off white head that diminishes rapidly to the slightest ring. Sweet chocolate and whiskey flavours are strong up front leading through to a charred, roasty bitterness. Medium body with somewhat low carbonation that leaves it feeling quite still in the mouth. Sampled at GABF 2005. Mangino (1027) - Mississippi, USA - OCT 18, 2005
Sampled @ GABF- Pours a pitch black, nice off white tan head. Aroma is full of whiskey and chocolate. Flavor is dominated by the barrel, whiskey a little chocolate and roasted nuts(almonds) Plums, acidic and sweet. body is really lacking. MrRomero (1976) - Nolanville, USA - OCT 16, 2005
GABF 2005: poured dark dark black with a medium brown head. Light whiskey aroma with roasted malt. Flavor is roasty, mild whiskey, walnuts and chocolate. Full bodied. Very nice. Rastacouere (6177) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 10, 2005
Almost no head shows on top of the pitch black pour. Straightforward and bold whiskey nose hints at a potentially too long sojourn in the barrel, while chocolate is the only obvious malt flavours sneaking in. Absent fruitiness, but minty cookies touch add a nuance you’d not have belived from the nose. Campfire smokiness reminds of the original happy jacks, but on the tongue, its is once again betraying its barrelling with a light, liquorous and alcoholic body. A beer I just don’t understand, far from bitter end’s best that I tried. whaleman (2178) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 5, 2005
GABF 2005. Translucent dark brown body with a slow, fully fading tan head. Nice aroma of cocoa nibs, wood char, vanilla, and mild whiskey. Strong rum raisin emerges in the flavor plus burnt dark fruits. Nice balance of sweet roasty malt, alcohol, mild tartness, and fruit. Delicious, long-lingering finish. A very good whiskey stout.

Very similar to the regular HJ but with a note of bourbon. Great mellow lactic character. As good as but not better than the regular HJ. brentfeesh (1208) - Mansfield, Ohio, USA - OCT 4, 2005
GABF 2005 rating. WOW, that’s good! Easy but flavorful. Potent, but unassumingly so. This was a deep, deep, red/brown/black color with no head. Very clear. Sweet aroma, toasted malts, coffee, bourbon (perhaps), very nice. The first sip hits you with chocolate, bourbon alcohol, and caramel malt. Some other things that I could not ID at the time. The body was medium and slick, as well as warm with alcohol. Tasty. BBB63 (6557) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - OCT 3, 2005
GABF 2005: Nearly opaque with good head and lace. The aroma has a dynamic chocolate and black malt combination with the bitter hops and some whiskey vapors. The taste was equal to the nose with the whiskey and wood character a bit more noticeable but not dominate. I even got a hint of overripened prune and berry on the finish. The feel is wonderful silky sticky smooth and a bit warming on the chest. A very good Imperial Stout indeed but just short of greatness. DavidP (1748) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 3, 2005
GABF ’05. Black body. Coffee, dry chocolate, and tons of barrel aging in the aroma. The flavor brings strong bourbon along with dry chocolate ’n coffee. The barrel presence is too big in this beer. MIBRomeo (2570) - Wisconsin, USA - OCT 3, 2005
Jet black pour tan head well laced. Hints of whiskey alcohol a bit of aok and roasted malt w/ a touch of bitter chocolate in the aroma. Great feel big creamy palate. Flavor is a buttery roasted malt carmel oak flavor and hints of whiskey Good stuff but to much butter.
