This is a hoppy Pilsner done in the Kiwi style. This is our representation of a style that New Zealand brewers are really crafting into something unique, a hoppy lager style beer that showcases our country’s hops. Bite features Motueka and Nelson Sauvin hops, both of which are making a big name for themselves around the world. Kiwi hop growers can’t produce enough of these varieties so you better get a glass of this one while you can!

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2016 Pint at Fort Street Union. Nothing much to the nose. Quite crisp, but there’s not much exciting in terms of flavour. A little straw and a good hit of hops.

500 ml bottle bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok.

Looks: Clear light straw golden colour; One finger head with crumpety white foam which lasts for 90 seconds; Beautiful sticky lacing with fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant and sweet Pils malt, with strong passion fruits, strong white grapes, honey, floral, molasses, lime and light grass.

Taste: Mid to light sweet Pils malt, with grapefruits, strong floral, molasses, earth, light spices, bread, strong lemon, lime, strong bitter hops and sharp grass.

Body: Close to medium body. Slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Solid Pils maltyness in a thick, slightly soapy background. Strong grapefruits and floral, nice moderate sweetness. Notable earth with light spices. very limey citrusy rounding. Pretty sharp and smart!

Hoppiness: Passion fruits, Strong white grapes, floral, lime and grass in nose. Grapefruits, strong floral, earth, spices, lemon, lime, and sharp grass in taste; Bitterness is very strong for a lasting, very astringent bitter sweet finish.

After Taste: Quite dry. Citrusy and strong bitter to mouth.

Comments: This is a very nice hoppy Pils with excellent Nelson Sauvin’s grapes and fruity aroma, plus Motueka’s strong limey and earthy hoppiness with well- balanced bitterness and sweet maltyness. Great thirst quencher for Summer and highly recommended!

I discovered to my chagrin that I’d arranged my birthday in a Monteiths bar. Having tried several vile insipid Monteiths beers, I had a Chomp and then a Bite. It is no surprise to discover that Black Dog is in fact owned by DB and is their craft option in DB pubs. I have vowed never to set foot in a DB bar again and apologised to my friends for putting them through this

Bottle. Pale lager aroma, not really a good pilsener, too floral and too sweet.

Nice and clean, nice dry bitter aftertaste. Light malt, thin body. Probably a good option for a summer nights sample session!

Bottle from Beer Cellar online shop (April 2014). Clear pale amber/gold, medium white head, massive hop aroma/flavour/bitterness for a pilsener, grassy/pine hops, passionfruit, sweet lime, some biscuity malt hiding underneath. Really nice.

Pint on tap pours golden with good white head. Aroma is of floral hops a bit of rosehip, lime and passion fruit. Heaps of carbonation. Well balanced caramel sweetness and bitterness. Dry aftertaste and the swirl of bitter grassy hops mixes well with a fresh sweet light to medium roasted malt.

It’s ok for a sunday beer, and it is a decent domestic beer that you’ll get on taps in pubs throughout. But it’s not hopped in the way that you might equate hops to bitterness or a taste profile. It’s crisp when cold, and doesn’t offer any offence in the flavour profile. For a Lazy Sunday shooting the breeze and telling lies it’s good.

Tasted 9/2/2014. Draught at "Queens Ferry Hotel", Auckland, NZ. Poured a clear amber with a maximum one-finger white foamy head that retained very very well (for the whole glass in fact). Laced very good as curtains and rings. Carbonation very high (excellent) with small to medium sized bubbles that lasted for the whole beer. Aroma of very nice floral hops and sweet tropical fruits (passionfruit and/or peach). Taste initially semi-sweet but quickly to a nice but not over-powering bitterness. Light body. Long nice mild and soft bitterness on the tongue. Very good.
