COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double or Imperial IPA is a hopheads dream, layer upon layer of hops consuming the palate with the aggression of a junkyard dog. It’s no secret at Black Dog Brewery we are mad about hops and this brew is what its all about. We used bucket loads of our favourite Australian, American and New Zealand hops to meld this potent elixir together. Held together by a mix of base crystal malts. If you’re not a fan of big hoppy and bitter brews, keep at bay this brew is not for the faint hearted. Beware Junk Yard Dog.

From a 330ml can on 2/9/2017. Pours a light amber with a small head. The aroma features a bit of caramel and stewed fruit. Take a sip and there's caramel, apricot, rye, spice and a touch of pepper. This is exceptionally bitter, with the hops metallic and resiny. The palate is slick and the carbonation average. Super intense and quite interesting in some ways, but ultimately far too abrasive and unbalanced to be really enjoyed.

ALLOVATE (3071) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUL 17, 2017
Not sure if this one is in the best shape, but without a canning date I have no idea the age. Into a chalice at just on cool. Muddy, tawny chestnut body with a cappuccino froth atop that daubs a thick ace. Massive hit of stewed plums, sherry, madeira and butterscotch on the nose spiced by prickly fusels that meld in well. Plummy and sweet, sticky toffee and burnt sugar palate. Bitter peak and tail, lasts well between sips. Woody, oaken flavour is unusual. Yeasty like the other beers of this brewer. Oily body with moderate to light carbonation. Not huge in mouthfeel but residually it really sticks around. Lacks the fruit esters of new age hops coming across as more English than U.S. Oxidation probably didn’t help either. Smashable, but just not balanced. (33cL can, no date stamp, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Bottle from Slowbeer (Oct 2014). Dark amber/copper, huge, fluffy off white head, massive resin/pine hop punch, thick, syrupy texture, chewy citrus/pine bitterness. Really good.

Yep what he said. Too much carbonation kills might what otherwise is a decent beer. Nose is classic mod strong IPA with chunky sweet malts and resin. Fizzy disjoints the palate; some hard ripe malts and hop bitterness but the penetration suffers from the bubbles.

Bottle, 11C. Copper with a huge off-white head. Thumping pine, grapefruit and toffee aroma. A whiff of booze. Rather overcarbonated, better after a few swirls. and after warming a little more. Somewhat sweet spiced toffee, peach; massive pine, grapefruit, kumquat. Very strong bitterness. Rambunctious. They haven’t got the bottle quite sorted on this one, but it’s still pretty good.

Pours amber with a large white head.
Nose shows pine, resionous hops and some sweet clean malt.
Sweet, malty flavours. More pine and resinous hops. Malt overload.
Carbonation is too high.

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2014 Well balanced and very flavoursome DIPA. Brownish amber and murky appearance with quite a thick mouthfeel. The aroma and taste are similar and include stone fruit, gooseberry, toffee, and a little bit resinous pine. Hard to pour due to high carbonation but the bubbles are not too aggressive on the palate. Pretty enjoyable beer overall just the flavours are a bit cluttered and do not shine as bright as some more minimal and cleverly designed DIPAs.

On tap at Scratch Bar 090814. Big beer packed full of hops that strip the lining of your mouth. Just like a junkyard dog this beer grabs you and won’t let go.

Caramel colour. Aroma is caramel. Taste is bitter resinous malt. Yuck! Just bitter with some crazy sweetness alongside. Finish is pure resinous bitterness. Overall, not my sort of hop character. Just don’t love any of these guys’ hoppy stuff - tastes like home brew. But their saison, stout and black IPA are great.
