Cask conditioned handpump Wig & Pen Northampton 03/10/12. A classic brown coloured beer with a tight whitish head and lacing. Very dry husky malts throughout this. Old fashioned bitter. Edging towards coffee flavours. Certainly contrasts with commercial description. Has a touch of chocolate in the nose. Nothing wrong with this but it’s not endearing.

Cask at the Grape and Grain Autumn beer festival, Crystal Palace. Amber pour with a white head. Caramel, nuts and slight hint of coconut aroma. Malts, caramel and light fruit flavours. Doesn’t quite do it for me.

Mahogany brown. Malty fruity aroma. Very silky smooth texture. Fruity flavour with a nice fruity and hoppy aftertaste.

Strange musty aroma, taste is slightly stale and dry but not in an unpleasant way, quite odd

Hand pulled at the Wellington, Birmingham. Light brown. Proper old-skool, man’s bitter. UK gritty dust hop. Lips rise over teeth, throat constricts, a bit. Epitome of Bitter. Get props for provenance, but not something I would actively set out to drink - the style that is.

Cask, The Salmon, Leicester. Amber with a dense foam. Aromas are toffee with floral notes and spices. Pithy grapefruit with lemon. Flavours are toffee with green apple and grapefruit bitterness. Dry tea with woody notes on the finish. OK.

Cask, gravity at Oxford Beer Festival, Fri 28th Oct 2011 Amber in colour with a large bubbly, foamy white head. Little bit of citrus, also a tiny tang of sour fruit, quite bitter, not bad. Tricky to rate stood up in a busy corridor area, holding programme, beer etc. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov12 3.2
