Tamerlane Brown Porter

World Beer Cup 2010 Gold medal - Brown Porter category NABA 2010 Silver Medal - Brown Porter category

Malts: 2-Row Pale, Crystal, Brown, Chocolate
Hops: Magnum, Palisades

Edgar Allan Poe’s (author of "The Raven") publishing career began humbly with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and other Poems (1827). The Brown Porter is the very first beer ever brewed at the Black Raven Brewery (formerly known as "Batch 1 Brown"). Featuring both the subtle nut flavors and easy drinkability of an English brown ale and hints of deeper coffee tones and the Northwest hop character of a porter. Quickly becoming a true local favorite.

This beer is the first style brewed at the Black Raven Brewery. Featuring both the subtle nut flavors and easy drinkability of an English brown and hints of deeper coffee tones and the hop character of a porter. Available year-round.

Draught at Collective on Tap, Woodinville, WA
Dark brown color with compact head. Dark caramel, but with a dusty character, some roasted nuts, some old coffee; ordinary bitterness; the mouthfeel is rather dry.
Nothing special.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours brown with a medium thin dense tan head that dissipates slowly to an outer ring. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Sweet roasty malt and coffee in the nose. Light body with a sweet malty character and notes of mild coffee, chocolate and caramel. The finish is sweet and malty with a hint of hops in the aftertaste. Above average overall.

Draft pour pint at the brewery. Pours a dark reddish brown color with a cream foam head. Mild nutty, chocolate aroma. Flavor is a nice roasted flavor with hints of coffee. Chocolate candy in the late palate. Has a bitterness to it in the finish as well. Enjoy the toasty flavor here. Good brown here. Or porter? Not sure. It’s good though.
