"Strong Yorkshire Ale"
Riggwelter is now our second best-selling bottled beer and has national listings in many of the major supermarkets.
Aroma
Roasted malt, hops and banana-fruit.
Taste
This strong, velvety ruby brown beer really is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It is deceptively clean drinking, with a wonderfully complex palate of coffee, bananas and liquorice which rewards you with a long, dry Goldings hop finish.
Ingredients
We use a base of Maris Otter malted barley, but add plenty of Pale Chocolate malt to give Riggwelter its rich dark colour, espresso nose and roasted malt flavours. We use a touch of wheat which helps deliver the lovely creamy head and lacing down the glass - just what you would expect from a proper Yorkshire beer!
All our bottled ales are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.
What’s in a name?
Riggwelter Ale takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Old Norse roots; “rygg” meaning back, and “velte” meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or “rigwelted”, when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance. It seemed the perfect name for a strong beer from the Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire.

Rich complex taste, sweet but a little sour as well, deep hop finish. The whole thing very rounded and satisfying in the mouth. Aroma is strong, coffee, raisins. But what’s it like? It feels serious, wood-paneled rooms, quiet conversation, tobacco smoke hanging in the air. A bit regency.

Une bonne bière noire qui reste dans la tradition anglaise. Un goût très prononcé en premier lieu qui laisse vite place à un arrière goût léger mais persistant.

Bottle at Premier Pub, Ljubljana. Pours brown with beige head. Some roastiness, caramel, malty, light chocolate, sweetish, quite watery, some bitterness in finish. Medium bodied.

Dark brown colour decent sized head, medium carbonation. Aroma of caramel, treacle and cocoa. Taste is similar with the addition of coffee and green hops to add a slight bitterness. Pretty good. Price Paid: £1 from Co-op.

Bottle from Tesco, Gateshead. A very dark amber-brown coloured beer with a malty, nutty flavour and a dry, roasted and red fruity finish. Very nice.

Bottle. Dark red-brown in colour. Mega-malty (burnt-roast malts, caramel, toffee, burnt sugar, nuts, some coffee). Fruity (dark fruits, berries). Earthy bitter hop character. Quite lively carbonation. Bitter-sweet, smoky, burnt-roast, malty ale. Dry roast malty finish. Tasty. Nice Old Ale! (2009-04)

Kita (2121) - Koper, SLOVENIA - JAN 19, 2017
Bottle, 0.50l. Clear brown color with thin creamy tan-like color with flat visible carbonation. Aroma of toasted and mild roasted malt, dry fruit and herbs. Taste starts with medium sweet toasted malt, follows grassy and fruity, while finish is pleasant moderate bitter. Medium body, slick texture and soft to average carbonation in palate. Not so strong, but pretty tasty...

Rich Amber brown coloured body, good compact off white head. I get the banana on the nose as described in the commercial description. Nice balanced bittersweet flavours. The bitterness lingers after swallowing for some time. Decent drink

Super dobre i tresciwe angielskie Ale. Super Ale
