Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 2009. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black with a thin white head. Intense malty aroma with molasses and damsons present. Creamy rich mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex gives maltloaf with raisins, figs, plums and treacle toffee. Slight hint of liquorice with the spicy hops to give a good robust aftertaste. Sweetness returns with a sherry like alcoholic warmth. A cracking strong ale and completely different from Old Peculier, try them together for comparison - that’s a festival in itself! Half pint at the Black Sheep Visitor Centre. Dark brown with a well formed head. Very nice chocolate/coffee taste. Sweet and nice. Chocolatey aroma. Very pleasant indeed but a little too sickly sweet to be a session beer.
