Introducing the big-hitting, the fabled, Riggwelter. You asked for a strong ale, we gave you.Riggwelter, a real powerhouse of a beer. Much thought went into the creation of our flagship strong ale. To create something with real strength and depth we developed a unique recipe featuring rich espresso aromas, dark fruit and roasted malt flavours. Riggwelter Ale takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Norse roots; rygg meaning back, and velte meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or riggwelted when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance. What better name for a strong beer from the Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire? Riggwelter is available in cask and bottle.

UPDATED: APR 18, 2006 Cask (gravity dispense) at White Cliffs Beer Festival, February 2006. Attractive rich ruby colour. Plenty of berry fruit on the nose. Also some marzipan and a hint of smoky malt. Licorice comes through on the palate with more plummy fruit and touches of caramel. Fairly dry and nicely balanced. Full mouthfeel. Smooth and mellow. Quite a classy drop.

(Cask, The Wharf, Aalborg) - Dark brown colour. Toasty nose, with hints of raisins. The taste is potent, yet reasonably easy drinking, with a full- flavoured sweet malty, slightly dry hoppy taste.

Strong, nutty, fruity, aroma with notes of liquorice and dark malt roastiness. Clear copper-brown body with decent and lasting, fine-bubbled, off-white head. Thick and malty chocolate flavour is nutty in character with some lightly salty, smoky, liquorice notes and roasty finishing bitterness. Rich, creamy, medium-full body with lively carbonation that awakens the tastebuds. I enjoyed this one in the bottle previously and find it to be every bit as satisfying on cask. Cask at GBBF 2005.
