Introducing the big-hitting, the fabled, Riggwelter. You asked for a strong ale, we gave you….Riggwelter, a real powerhouse of a beer. Much thought went into the creation of our flagship ‘strong’ ale. To create something with real strength and depth we developed a unique recipe featuring rich espresso aromas, dark fruit and roasted malt flavours. Riggwelter Ale takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Norse roots; “rygg” meaning back, and “velte” meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or ‘riggwelted’ when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance. What better name for a strong beer from the Black Sheep Brewery in Yorkshire? Riggwelter is available in cask and bottle.

On cask at Ye Olde Starre Inne, York. Appearance - deep amber to brown with a lovely fawn coloured head. Nose - liquorice dark chocolate and biscuits. Nuts and honeycomb too. Taste - liquorice and molasses. Still biscuits at the back. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy yet crunchy texture and a long dry crunchy finish. Overall - a really challenging but rewarding ale.

Cask Conditioned at The Forresters Arms, Grassington. Red brown chestnut colour with thick yorkshire head. Big fruity, sweet malt flavour with an alcohol kick, although the abv in the cask is a little lower at 5.6%. Good bitter dry finish, almost salty for some reason. Godd full beer.

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2008 Cask (Peterborough BF 2007) Very dark ruby brown. Coffee and maly aroma. Strong sweet malty taste. A very rich roast. The guys at the Black Sheep stand had intended to serve this with a sparkler - shocking!

Svesse (8972) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - SEP 12, 2010
(Cask at GBBF London Earl’s Court, 4 Aug 2010) Dark reddish brown colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dried fruit, raisins, prunes, figs and sweet liquorice. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, raisins, prunes, dark bread, over-ripe pineapple and a good, spicy bitterness. More than medium body, with a solid malt sweetness. Well balanced and tasty, mooreish. Very nice.

rumore (877) - Rimini, ITALY - DEC 3, 2016
Pours black with literally no foam. Aroma is not intense, and gives terrain and some coffee. Body is tendentially light but a bit creamy and oily. Taste is balanced between sweet and bitter, with an enjoyable final bitterness.
