September 5th, 2014 - Dad and I are cruising in the new hip and upcoming neighborhood budding near downtown, and close to our favorite (Epic) is Black Shirts operations. I step inside to sample their distinct take on serving beer to their customers, focusing on one elegant recipe and generating new and interesting variations, not unlike the design team behind the CareBears. I begin with the Colorado Red Ale, unsure if this is the Eve recipe. Red and mostly clear, it retains a mild haze, and a mottled head, with one or two titanic bubbles keeping down the rest. The aroma is clearly a member of the amber family, which brown sugar sweets and ripened fruit in there, but it has a tanginess and sourness that distinguishes the Colorado Red right away. The flavor is also additionally bitter, and thus attention grabbing. Rye and hops play off each other, rounding each other like dogs at play, each vying for my tongues attention in alternation. But these warm up. The beginning of the sip is cleaner, crisper and more neutral, like Perrier, only then yielding to an astringency that demands study.

12 oz goblet at The Terminal. Black Shirt makes some really pretty beers. This is a brilliant, clear red with a white head. Aroma is malty with hints at toffee, biscuits, chocolate and well utilized hops add a touch of citrus. The palate is medium. Very clean and balanced flavor. For the style the malt is pleasantly complex. Bready flavors anywhere from caramel to chocolate to earth are noted. A fairly sturdy bitterness gives balance with some citrus hop flavors rounding out the finish. This is what I want from a red ale. Very well done.

Sample from Studio Track #2014-03 at the tap room. Reddish-amber color with a medium light beige head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel and fruit. Medium-bodied with flavors of roast malt, caramel and mild grassy hops. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Draft. Pours a thick, well retained, light beige head, over a clear copper/amber (SRM 18) body....nose is toasted malts, with biscuit tones, light rye type spice, light pine, floral honey notes....taste is slightly sweet malts with hints of fig, cocoa, floral honey notes, light lemon tones from the hops, ending with a moderate bitter finish.....mouth feel, medium body, mils astringency, slight acid. This really is not an Amber. It is quite atypical, of loads of spice note from the malt back bone, floral tones from the hops. It is one of those craft experiments, that worked, think of it as a dark APA. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7
