On cask @ Cloisters. Pours black almost opaque with a nice head. The nose has some chocolate and biscuits. The taste confirms the chocolate biscuits. The palate is well balanced. This one does better than the others to hide the chalkiness but it is still there and it is even intrusive with the dark malty flavours.
Cask at Cloisters tap takeover Nov 2012, memory banks rate. They were pretty memorable due to the brewer talking us through the water supply, and the noticeable chalky effect it had on all his beers. This pours black with a thick off-white head. Aromas of dark stone fruit, light roast. Taste is more chocolate than roast, and more dark fruits. Hides the chalkiness this one. Simple roasty body. A bit dry, some estery herbal hop retronasals. A little watery, but a very easy drinker. I gave samples of this to people who didn’t want something too heavy and most agreed it was an easy drinker, and went for a full one.
Cask conditioned at Cambridge Winter Beer Fest ’13. Very Dark Brown with cream head. This beer had quite a hoppy bitterness from the off, reasonably crisp but also with a hint of sweetness from the malts. A touch of resin from the hop. Really quite tasty and decent. Breezy Bael scented nose, epic black body and a slight sandy head. Real depth draws in from the initial taste with almost Ribena or Rioja ruby sweetness followed by toffee and almond palate aided by a pillowy moutfeel. The finish continues a-pace, throwing a slow toasted moreish malt into the finish before a deceptively bitter linger with drops of Bergamot that sweeps things clean.
A superbly balanced beer, my favourite of the lot. Named after an idea and profession of Joe’s better half, although I’d like to get the full tale some day. Refreshing, fresh tasting yet developed, fluid from nose to linger. The effort and know-how put into the brew pours out of this number, frustrating that it doesn’t scratch the surface of the other (although excellent, sideways takes on British beers).Cask, Cloisters, BlackBar Takeover

From cask at Cloisters. Pours clear and golden deep amber to brown with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted malty, light chocolate and toffee. Bitter, medium sweet and roasted breadish. Cask-conditioned at the Cambridgeshire & Lincolnshire Beeriodical, at the Seven Stars, Bristol, August 2012. Dark, ruddy brown with a decent, off-white head. Sweet malty brew, with caramel, dark fruits and a gently bitter finish. Would make an excellent winter warmer.
