Ale brewed with fig juice. A traditional style named for John Darby, preacher of temperance whose parishioners were oddly moved by a "soft drink" they insisted was just fig juice...

Fresh out of the fridge, this definitely needs some settling down, as it is overly carbonated and produces a huge meringue-like head. Once warmed and aerated, its a nice golden brew, heady with aromas. Grassy, lemon-pepper, hints of various fruits, cider, toffee-malt, whiskey and a bit of cheesy yeast. The beer is distinctly, though subtly sour, with a slightly clean finish. Classicly, farmhouse-style, this is a great refresher, especially for fans of sour ales. I preferred this over their Seasonal Moneuse, which may have been a bit stale.

Shelton 2017. Pours a hazy golden orange from the bottle with big fluffy off-white head that dissipates slowly to leave good lace. Aroma of Belgian farmhouse esters with hints of citrus and spice, overall light fruitiness and bready malt. Taste follows, soft and bubbly, nicely complex with an overall yeastiness. Pretty interesting beer, good stuff.

0.75 l bottle from Koht Pudelpood, Tallinn, Estonia. Appearances is pale amber, cloudy and still, i.e. no head. This is just a fig juice with ABV of 5.8% and it obviously has barley malts too since this is ale. Taste is, however, mainly fig juice, which is not bad.

750 ml bottle at O’Connors. Cloudy amber with big white head. Aroma is herby, grassy, flowers and light alcohol. Taste is similar, complex, blonde-ish notes, herbs, flowers, alcohol with a yeasty slight phenoly finish.

Bottle from Smakpiwa.pl. Piwo ma piekna barwe najpierw bursztynowa po dolaniu calej masy osadu metna w kolorze niemal kakao. Piana srednia i srednio trwala. W smaku figi, daktyle, troche kasztanow jadalnych i ta moja ulubiona drewniano kwaskowa nuta towarzyszaca za kazdym przelknieciem. Syropowato figowe piwo ze spora dawka nut wiejskich i kwaskowych posmakow.

Medium aroma of malts, caramel, Belgian yeast, orange, figs, hops, citrus and spices.

Turbid/opaque amber/orange beer with heavy yeast and with a medium/large off-white head.

Starts medium sweet with malts, caramel, Belgian yeast, orange and figs; ends slightly bitter and dry with hops, citrus and spices.

This beer is rather intense, complex and balanced. Feels like a mix between a regular Belgian ale and a Saison. That fig juice adds a mostly sweet flavour and a very slight ’tart’ that I would simply describe with ’spices’. A great appearance and palate as well, but the aroma could have been stronger.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, no date I could find on it. Served in a Blaugies chalice, the beer pours an orange/amber color with a couple inch off-white head that stuck around for a while. There’s a small amount of lacing. Aroma is nice and earthy, the brew smells like wheat/grainy malt, grassiness, figs, peppery spice and some citrus. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s also some white grape and apple (both sweet and tart) flavors noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, its high but soft carbonation makes it creamy, smooth and easy to drink. I think this is a good overall brew, I liked it. Certainly worth picking up!

F: big, egg-white, average retention. C: gold, hazy. A: malt, orange peels, spicy, bit of lemon, basement, fruity sourness, touch of vinegar. T: malt, dry fruity, spicy, lemon peels, medium body, medium carbonation, very good rates here but for me nothing special, sample from tap @ ZBF 2017 Leuven.

Bottle at La Tana a Bruxelles. Pours cloudy amber, actually a gusher. Aroma is light booze, lightly herbal and floral. Body is medium, crisp carbonation, quite sweet, a bit boozy still. Palate has carbonation, bitterness and booze. Good.
