Ale brewed with fig juice. A traditional style named for John Darby, preacher of temperance whose parishioners were oddly moved by a "soft drink" they insisted was just fig juice...

Ar: Lean lemon and hay hop aroma; moderate skunkiness; pear and peach skin; a bit of black pepper; mushroom. Ap: Cloudy orange; medium off-white head with good retention, settling into a dense cap of foam. T: Lemon and hay; a bit of acetic sourness; tangy fruit skin; underripe peach; very faint cracker malt; hay and more lemon; twangy; bitterness is medium and a bit edgy; finish is dried citrus rind and a bit of black pepper. P: Lean body with mouth-filling carbonation; finish is very dry. O: A true-to-style Belgian saison; the fruit adds to the lean, fruity character of the beer; dry and refreshing; could do with a bit more malt character.

Pours, if you can call it that....mostly foam...a hazy pale gold. I see a lot of lacing as the foam recedes. The smell spicy, mostly white pepper, funky, fruity as in green apples and pears. Taste wise, light tartness greets my taste buds, green apples and pears, funky like a monkey, white pepper, earthy malt presence. Lots of champagne like dryness and feel. This is very good but the figs seem to have eluded my palate. This is very good but the figs seem to have eluded my palate; nah, must be that's what makes this so juicy. It's been a long time since I actually ate figs other than fig newtons.

Birra molto particolare.

Bottle. Amber with a large white head that settles to a fluffy inch or so, then lasts and coats the glass. Aroma of crackery dough, tart orange juice, citrus blossoms, apricots, mild funk and spices. Creamy, and alive beneath excessive carbonation. Sweet soft pale malt, fruit with both sweetness and a little tartness, a dry floral and spicy bitter finish. After a while both a deep fruity sweetness (presumably the figs but I wouldn't have guessed) and the spices creep up. Right up my street.

Bb 2019. Golden yellow with soapy head. Sweet fruity yeast. Similar to a saison, lots of interesting yeast, grapeseed, grassy. Nice big carbonation, gives the impression as if it's tart. Finish has some fruity yeast, malt. Really enjoyable ale. Not as psychotic in character as some modern beers, but it's full of character in a classical traditional sense. Not just the history behind the beer, but the fantastic flavors from the yeast and apparently the sugars from the fig juice. Worth checking out.

Hazy deep golden color with a fine white head. Nice intensity in the aroma. Typical Belgian. Medium (+) body and an average carbonation level. Moderate sweet and a fine acidity. Lasting tail and a dry ending. Yeast, some spices, citric and fruity flavor. Lovely beer.
