Saison D’Epeautre is a saison beer made in a unique traditional style, using spelt and barley malt in the mash. Very dry and light in body, with a hint of wheaty tartness and a hardy texture that expresses the character of spelt, a primitive strain of wheat.

It is one truly feisty brew, with an outrageous pop and a natural long-lasting head. And ah, the aroma! It’s a wonderfully heady, musty, cellar character that is unmistakably Belgian and a lot like champagne. The taste delivers on the promise of the nose. Very enjoyable, and perfect for summer, but wonderful at any time of year.

D’Epeautre is hand-brewed in small batches by the impassioned, gifted Blaugies brewers, a husband, wife, and son team. They’re very adventurous in recreating traditional beer styles – and are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. The family enjoys good food and beer, and consumes a lot of its own product for cooking and drinking. We like the rougher, grainier malt texture of all their beers. They give you the feeling that the brewers put this beer in a bottle just a few days ago, especially for you.

Bottle 0,75 at Slacker. Pours a bit hazy and yellow, with huge white head. Aroma of yeast, fruits, apricot, apple. Taste is sweet, spelt, banana, yeast. Lively carbonation. Very nice.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a hazy glowing, gold with a big champagne like head with fine bubbles. Very active carbonation through the haze. Spelt really comes out in the nose with some faint pear and cherry notes as it warms. Some light banana cream esters too, but not weizen levels. Soft mouthfeel with very active carbonation. Goes down like water really. So smooth and silky and refreshing. Bitterness on the finish but not overly so. Fairly well-balanced without being too sweet.

0,75L bottle (from Koht). Pours golden with huge whiteish head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, fruity, apricots, apples. Flavor is sweet and bitter, fruits, apricots, citrus, some wheaty notes and slight tartness. Finish is sweet and slightly bitter with touch of metallic notes. Drinkability is excellent. Overall: nice one.

Bottle @ brewery, Blaugies. Hazy yellow colour, white foam. Citrussy, wheat, lemon. Dry and spicy. Bitter finish. Good saison.

Jun. ’16. A 0.75 l bottle. It poured lightly hazy yellow body with a big head. Vanilla, sugar, lemon, wheat, some yeast, decent. Flavor was only lightly sour, almost bland. Light wheat notes combined with muddy yeast, a bit stale in that way, but not bad. Only very, very watery and thin with almost no finish. Vinous and yeasty. Boring, almost nothing here.

Bottle at the Delirium saison event. Aroma is great, wheaty, spelt I guess, grainy. Taste is greater, fruity cherry sweetness, grainy crispness, dry and refreshing. Great stuff. Some vanilla ice cream elements. Tiny touch of spice. Lovely.

Golden hazy with giant white head, aroma is saison yeast, fruity, citric, slightly funky, a lot of banana; taste is fruity, banana, low to medium bitter, bitter hoppy finish; Creamy mouthfell, reminds me of hefeweizen, banana morphs into spicy bitterness

750ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Hazy amber color. Huge size, thick white head, stays. Leather, sweet, fruity, peach in aroma. Perfume, sweet, bready, bit yeasty, faint leather, earthy in taste. High carbonation. Leather and peaches in aftertaste. Crisp mouthfeel. Drinkable brew.

750ml bottle (Pothouse, Tallinn)
Opens with a bang rather than a pop or a pffft. Required 1.6L of glass volume to fit the 0.7L of beer. Pleasant saisony aroma. Light grains in the taste. First pour has a fizzy palate, later pours, with yeast have a flatish palate, a bit watery either way. Drinkable, but not grabbing me.

phfyysik (1365) - Tartu, ESTONIA - MAY 15, 2016
Yellow with medium head. aroma is sourish, tropical fruits, some berries, old cellar, little spring flowers, citrus. Taste is soft, a little watery, some bitterness, otherwise same as aroma. Very good!
