UPDATED: FEB 15, 2010 Sample at the brewpub. Pours glossy black with a medium thick tan head that diminishes slowly. Sticky rings of lacing on the glass. Difficult to detect aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Medium, smooth body with flavors of coffee, dark malt and bittersweet chocolate. The finish is roasty with a short coffee aftertaste. Just average overall.

Bottle @ Stephen’s house. Pours a dark brown appearance with a thin brown head. A bit of coffee along with a bunch of cocoa, dark chocolate, oatmeal, and vanilla. A bit twangy fruitiness from the coffee in the flavor. A lot of chocolate with a nice soft body. Pretty nice. douglas88 (9620) - Portland, Oregon, USA - SEP 19, 2013

Flight pour on tap at the brewpub (Corvallis, OR). Pours a darker deep blackish brown hue, a near opaque middle shows some healthy roasty cocoa brown glow on the edges and bottom. Creamy light brown head atop stays as a pleasant frothy layer, solid ringer with subtle layer laces nicely. Aromas present toasty and roasty oats, black malts and some cold press coffee. Caramel and cocoa elements offer some depth and darkness, jabs of sweet and dark roast mingle well. Initial is medium bodied, gentle smoke and roasty coffee hit the palate. A bit dark and bitter, a more dry appeal in the body and on the palate than expected. Nothing sweet or overdone. A more dry and toasty experience, a dab of silkiness into the backend. A touch creamy, the oats smooth this one over the palaate but again, this one never ends up sweet or malt driven. Dry and subtle roasty finish, lingering cocoa, toasty biscuits and bitter nib. Pretty masterful Oatmeal Stout, eschewing a sweeter chewy experience for a more dry and bitter feel at times without sacrificing the toasty, roasty and cocoa appeal and flavor. Pretty and good on the palate.
