Bottle opened up at the 2013 year end Ottawa tasting, thanks Phil. Vibrant amber with a light brown head. Sweet aroma combining vanilla and sugary caramel malts, oak, orange zest, brown sugar, slightly buttery. A dark amber ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet candy sugar malt with orange pulp, coriander, nice. In mouth, a nice sweet caramel malt with Bourbon barrel notes, light vanilla, licorice, coriander, and loads of alcohol. Bottle... Clear, deep ruby pour with a small, fizzy, white head. Oodles of raw oak, caramel and bourbon in the aroma. Full-bodied, but kind of thin, with mild carbonation. The flavor is nicely balanced - oak and a subtle caramel component that would be more prominent if not soaked up by the oak. Bottle pours dark brown with thin tan head. Aroma oak, bourbon and a bit of sour. taste brown sugar, malts, caramel, toffee, marshmallow, vanilla, oak, whiskey. Finish mild oak and whiskey. Palate smooth and full.<p.
I was expecting a powerful barrel-aged strong ale so was a little put off at first, but realized it’s very good in its own way - a more delicate easy drinking bourbon-barrel aged beer. Not that aggressive or extreme but very enjoyable.

Sample from bottle. Emerges as a hazy brown with a lingering ring of foam at the edges. Lots of brown sugar in the aroma with a notable barrel presence. Bottle shared at Dan’s Birthday Tasting (Lyons, IL). Pours a nice deeper brownish orange hue, a mellow haziness, nice healthy orange glow on the edges. A frothy tannish head atop stays decent sized, sticks around and laces ok. Aromas are a bit carmelized, some apple elements, some oak, whiskey, some vanilla. Firm carmelization, some oak, and gentle toffee. Some spirit, warmth. Initial is a bit of warmth, toffee and toast, carmelized malts meet some apple, gentle fruit. Some vanilla, wet wood, and spirit. Middle is a bit toasty, gentle spice, bread and biscuit. Apple fruit and some spice into the backend, more wet wood and oak, some spirit. A bit hot, tannic with some richer oak, some toast. Ok. Draft at Saraveza, Portland. 2010 vintage. Pours a medium reddish brown, slight tan head. Served a bit cold, warming the beer would improve aroma. Figs, booze, candi sugar. Body lively, finish sweet, woody and surprisingly not very hot. Age has treated this well, glad to have it on tap.
