On tap at the brewpub. Fairly thin dark brown pour, with just a thin head to it that’s gone in a flash. Nose is fairly understated, but somehow seems like it wants to be more vibrant: trace of molasses, nascent dry hops, stale coffee. Body is a bit thin, no surprise there, but the flavors are a bit more substantial than initial expectations, with a relatively dry hop character that seems to complement the chocolate malts that underlie things. Decent effort. ganache (5958) - New Jersey, USA - AUG 17, 2011
Draught from Lennie’s. Black beer with a touch of ruby in the edges and a lacing, jiggling tan head. Nose light roast, strong fruit, medium-malty. Sticky lips ahead! Sticky-malty body and taste starts mildly fruity and sweet but dries out to a hint of ash and roast and black patent, low bitterness and low mellow-harshing. Medium-body comes at you in waves of malt and also has a slight, pleasant tang. Low hop crispness. Not really a black IPA, more a a generic undefined American Dark Ale, but I can drink it!
