2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Way too much caramel malt, and the alcohol can be tasted, which in my mind is a recipe for a flawed DIPA. I don’t know what they need to change in the recipe and/or the process, but this beer is too sweet, and I can taste the alcohol very clearly. Maybe the fermentation temperatures should be ramped down? Anyway, my first and probably my last #3 DIPA.

Hazy deep gold beer, decent pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth with decent fine carbonation. Soft malts, sweetish. Resin in to smooth pine and hop spice. Trace of red berries! Bitterish floral finish. Not bad.
Bottle at home. Pours clear amber with a large, foamy off-white head, long retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy orange and citrus hops, biscuit and lightly toasted malt with pear esters. Flavor is moderate orange and citrus hops, heavy bitterness, medium biscuit malt and a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. GG (2332) - NorCal, California, USA - NOV 6, 2014

This first time with The Big Dipa really wasn’t all that great. I’m not sure how much they improved with this one, because it too wasn’t really all that great. Hops are present in the aroma, but so it a fruity sweetness like old orange juice soaked in french bread. Malts dominate the flavor in everyway and the hops squeak out a meager existence on the palate. The crushing malts make this hard to enjoy, and it boarders on barleywine territory. In fact, if viewed in that way it’s not all that bad. slowrunner77 (12594) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 18, 2014
"Big, biscuity, more malty and heavier than their regular ipa. Less aromatic than their regular ipa, but not due to a lack of hops. They;re there. Similar in body/style to Moylander." batneil (754) - - JUL 13, 2014
Bottle. It’s a solid beer, but there isn’t much of an IPA about it. I didn’t get the usual hoppy flavour. Still, it’s a good-tasting easy-drinking beer.

Poured a dark caramel amber cloudy color with two fingers of khaki white gluey head. Very good amount of white foamy layered lacing on the sides on the way down. Very good retention on the top as well.
At first smelled a mix of wet, cascade hops and earthy grainy malts. Lemon tries to come in there. Also got some rye hops. Some caramel malts as well.
Tasted pretty much what I thought it would after the smell. Earthy, grainy, bready malts with cascade, rye and herb hops. Not as bitter as anticipated. Faint sour fruit notes as well.
Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Abrupt, slightly bitter finish.
Much better than the Blue Frog Grog & Grill IPA and overall better than I thought it would be. I still probably wouldn’t get it again. _angst_ (4900) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - MAY 13, 2012
Bottle shared at my 30:th birthday tasting on May 5 (30 år av Surt). Courtesy of Marsiblursi. Pours tiny hazy deep golden with a creamy offwhite head that is rather quick to dissipate while leaving ome trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with caramel, sugar, pineapple, mango, pine, basement, nuts, freshly cut grass and hints of alcohol, mould and wet soil. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty, floral and tiny metallic with honey, pineapple, mango, orange peal, nuts, dark sweet bread, cereal, alcohol, freshly cut grass and hints of caramel. Mouthfeel is smooth, boozy, tiny oily bitter and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with pine, dark sweet bread, mango, pineapple and fresh grass. sebletitje (10286) - Enghien, BELGIUM - MAY 9, 2012
Bottle at "30 år av surt", on May 5, 2012 in Göteborg.
