THOUGHTS: A little more subtle than I was expecting at first, but it kept improving as it warmed. Very Belgian. Nice and sort of special for Christmas, but not very Christmasy.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, very dark red with a huge, off-white head that mostly lasted and diminished at a painfully slow rate and left good lacing. The aroma was nice but a little weak and contained moderate candi sugar; very light hops; moderate to heavy spicy Belgian yeast; raisin; prune; apple; and cherry. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and slightly acidic; while the finish was moderately acidic and lightly bitter with an average to long duration. There was caisugar, molasses, caramel, dark fruits, spicy yeast, cherry, prune, raisin, hints of brown sugar, a little apple, more yeast, slight hops, hints of earthy and metallic hops and yeast and hints of cocoa. The medium body was creamy with soft, but very tingly carbonation and a dry and lightly astringent finish.

From Cervezalandia. At JJ’s house. Shared in wine glasses. Very foamy but doesnt feel overcarbonated but smooth and light. Not bad but dull and with a bit of acidity

Dark brown color with light brown head. Aroma has some spicy yeast, dark sugar and some dark, tart fruits. Taste starts slightly tart and fruity, a bit of sugar but not really sweet and finishes dry and spicy. Body is highly effervescent, medium and quite dry on the aftertaste. Discovered in the back of the cellar, this release might have been a bit past its Best By date when I cracked it open. Even so I don’t think I will be giving it a second chance due to the underwhelming experience and sheer number of alternatives (such as Great Lakes Christmas Ale). Hopefully other Blue Mountain beers are more representative of their approach to brewing.
Aroma / Appearance - A heady ochre pillar of foam surges to the top of the glass before beginning to ebb into a dusky black core with chestnut fringes. Peppermint, walnuts, and dry oak rise upwards on a wave of soothing vanilla.
Flavor / Palate - Bubbly generic cola mixed with spicy nutmeg tickles the palate before a quick transition to a nutty clean finish. The light body detracts a bit from the enjoyment but does make this unremarkable release a bit easier to finish. Ultimately though with so many other choices I don’t think I would try it again even if Blue Mountain was one of my locals.
