Boo! Has there ever been a better feeling then when you were a kid spiriting around the neighborhood in a white sheet with a bucket of candy bars? No, not really. But we figured if we loaded up an Imperial pumpkin ale with natural chocolate flavor from cocoa nibs and stick it in a bourbon barrel for a few months it might come pretty close.

Big thanks to my good friend Steve Klenk for this one, and what a gorgeous bottle this is, with an embossed ghost behind orange letters and pumpkin. Pours turbid pumpkin colored with off-white head. Nose is bready caramel malt, bourbon, pumpkin puree, cacao. Tastes of bourbon, pumpkin, big hops, cacao, vanilla. Rich, smooth, and complex palate, with bourbon up front, the pumpkin as a solid secondary taste, and finishing vanilla, cacao, and squash. This is as unique a pumpkin beer as I have ever quaffed, and Im damned glad to have a friend like Steve to share it with me. Take a small bite of pumpkin pie, add a Hersheys Kiss, then without swallowing take a big hit of Cognac, and you have this beer, and it tastes great.

Bottle:   Thanks Bert!   Caramel colored, moderate to large foamy pale caramel, so-so lacing.   Definiate cocoa and bourbon aged pumpkin on the nose.   Smells fairly inviting.   Soft cocoa on the tongue, mild pumpkin spices (strong but not bright), with a little caramel and Bourbon on the backside.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Cocoa comes to the back as it warms up.   Even a bit of vanilla makes an appearance.   Pretty tasty overall.

clear amber color; no pumpkin in the aroma - cinnamon and oak; very mild pumkin flavor and pie spices; notes of oak and bourbon; as much as I detest pumpkin beers, this one is not bad

750ml bottle. Poured a hazy, dark brown-amber color with a huge, huge, huge head. Was initially worried about infection because it was almost all foam, and the bottle kept slowly foaming over for at least 15 minutes. Aroma was light chocolate notes, with some mild pumpkin spices. Light sweet cocoa nib notes, light barrel notes. I actually really liked this one despite being a slow gusher.

Dark brown coloured body with a rich and dense ligth brown head, about four centimetres tall. Aroma of allspice, canella, cloves and a good dose of nutmeg, all with a lot of rich peaty malt and some noticeable caramelised sugars. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich malt flavours abound with a good deal of spices and a lot of sweetness at the end. Aftertaste shows caramel, toffee, pit fruits, malt and a lot of spices that permeate and a soft alcohol warmth at the end. Overall, a very nice spiced beer with a rich flavour throughout and a nice complexity. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Costco in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 21-August-2015 for US$8,99 sampled in the mountains of Shenendoah National Park on 19-September-2015.
