Clear dark brown color, creamy light brown head. Roasted, malty, coffee, citrus taste. Citrus and bitter aftertaste. Moussy mouthfeel, pretty high bitterness. Citrus and roasted scent.
A dark reddish brown IPA with a thick brown head. In aroma, nice Nelson-Sauvin wild hops, ith grapes, lemons, and light chocolate. In mouth, a nice light chocolate, overlayed with funky hops, cat pee, very nice, rich and smooth. On tap at Oldsmar Tap House, Jan 4 2011. bottle, from Sam’s Quik stop. Good aroma, sweet, toasty. citrusy, little chocolate. Dark orangy brown color, good head, spotty lace. Bitter flavor. Lite body, oily creamy mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. OK, didn’t like the blend of flavor. Malt and hops combo wasn’t doing it for me. Slipstream (2626) - USA - JAN 23, 2011
10th anniversary for Blue Point, says the bottle cap. It has been a great decade for American beer. I am not a huge Blue Point fan, but I couldn’t resist buying something called Toxic Sludge. I like the concept too - some of the money you spend goes to protect birds. Dark brown pour with a burgeoning, bubbly crown. This is a dry, herby, astringent IPA. Hopefully it is not really toxic. It is not that sludgey either. This made me think of a new term - coffee IPA - not sure that has been used before. The hops reminded me of some German styles. It did grow on me some as I sipped, but it is not really an amazing IPA. scarletfire65 (1466) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 23, 2011
Dark brown to black, medium beige head dissipated quickly. Nose was kind of weak - dark malt, stale coffee, cola. Flavor profile is predominantly bitter hops and malt. Hints of burnt coffee, licorice, pine. The black IPA style is new to me and I found the combination of flavors not too enjoyable. I think a touch more malty sweetness, the backbone of many high IBU IPA’s, would have been a good thing. The roasted flavors riding on so many hops produced a burnt, unbalanced palate.

dark amber hue with a short beige head and a thick network of lacing. the thin body and moderate carb make for an interesting mouthfeel. moderate bitterness, light grassy notes. decent brew. BillZav (22) - Sarasota, Florida, USA - JAN 16, 2011
Toxic Sludge is a smooth, easy drinking ale. Mocha in color, it has appreciable notes of caramel malt and chocolate balanced by grassy hops with a slightly bitter finish. There’s a hint of citrusy fruit in the backbone, such as grapefruit, that compliments the beer. Toxic Sludge has a somewhat lighter feel to it compared to others in its style, such as Cigar City Or, but nevertheless is a very enjoyable black IPA.

(22oz bomber thanks to Mora2000) clear medium brown, ring of creamy tan bubbles. Nose of chocolate malt, brown sugar, bitter citrus. Taste of grapefruit, chocolate malt, more bitter than balanced but a nice creamy body. beachbum25 (1092) - Powellville, Maryland, USA - JAN 2, 2011
On tap @ Specific Gravity, Salisbury Md-Dark brown pour w/a moderate head. Burnt malt aroma. Started out w/a little bit of a stout flavor, some roasted malt/caramel, but that was soon overwelmed by a very bitter hop flavor. These two flavors just did not blend well for me, gave it a burnt malt flavor which I just didn’t enjoy. I enjoy a nice balanced IPA, even a Black IPA; this isn’t it. Long bitter, burnt finish. rocbyter (2124) - Waterbury, Connecticut, USA - DEC 28, 2010
Malty and hop aroma. Clear amber color with a large brown head. Mild sweet being with a sweet and hoppy finish.
