Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. 16oz can from Perfect Pour. Shared with Steph. Can says "Extremely fresh"... Lol where is the date? Put your money where your mouth is, BP. Kind of clear dark brown red color. Made hazy with lots of fine particles in the body. Thin khaki head. Some bits of lace, mostly loose. Medium to bigger body. Reasonably smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Aroma and flavor is a little disappointing. Its a black IPA, yeah, but it tastes kind of like a black IPA that a macrobrewer made. Like a leinenkugels black IPA or something. Very mild and mild-mannered. Kind of sweet, too. Moderate sweet taste, light on the bitterness. Some chocolate malt, toasty malt, nutty malt, and earthy hop. Light bit of pine. Tastes like a hoppier but basic brown ale, basically. Light bit of metallic. This is my friend Stephs first time trying a black IPA... She likes it, but her only input is that "it tastes a little watered down". And that is fucking spot on! This is like a decent black IPA sat around for a bit, got a little malty and sweet, and then was watered down a bit. OK "black IPA", I suppose. I like the style so I may be a bit forgiving. But "Toxic Sludge" seems like a misnomer. I asked Steph whatd shed score this (never asked her that before). She said 2.7, which Im pretty impressed by. Because 3 is close to average, she says. Nice.

Poured from a can into a snifter. Great black color with a thin head. The aroma is roasted malt and hoppy, but not too overpowering like a lot of black IPA's I've had. The taste is a perfect blend of toasty malt and hops. Not too bitter. Great black IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Big fucken can @ home, thanks to BoostIPA. Deep burgundy orange appearance with a foamy brown head. Minty, chocolate, burnt malty nose. A touch of butterscotch. Body is a bit flabby. Lots of toffee and burnt sugar. Pretty bitter flavor. Disappointing.

Can-purchased at total wine in Springfield, VA Pours dark brown hue with a small soapy kacki head. nose is woody, almost like tree bark, lite piney hops, but lots of burnt wood notes. flavors are alot like the nose-lots of fresh woody notes-chocolate, hops, firm woody bitterness. not as assertive as i would like my black ipas to be. however, it does not have that copper penny note that alot of beers in this style tend to have. body is very lite, almost watery at times. This is an average take on this style. no off flavors though so i cant complain about that.

Can. Pours a brown color with white head. Roasty, minerally, toast aromas. Roasty, earthy, slight metallic, herbal flavors. Meh.

The best black ipa Ive had yet. 16oz can into a large pilsner glass, pours a cola brown, red amber highlights, cherry coke reminiscant, and visable thoughout, a nice new appearance for a black ipa, rather than the midnight black. Aroma is pine, bitter melon, tart candy, and a hop filed. Taste is sweet hops, an enjoyable bitterness that cleans up rather quickly and then ushers in the fresh hops and melon tangents. The drinkability of this one is superb, not as dark and down as most black ipas, this one leaves a lager freshness and smooth finish with the hop malt balance, it is really a very well balanced brew. Finally a black ipa I will want to go after each time I see it. Excellent.

I usually do not care for IPAs. I decided to order one with a flight at the British Beer Company. I was surprised by how well balanced it was. The hops were floral with notes of pine resin. The malts were very rich and well balanced with the hops. A full flavored beer worked very without being overpowering.

16oz can. Pours a dark reddish brown with a tan head. Slight hop aroma. Sweet malt flavors of dark fruits and chocolate. Much sweeter and maltier than the usual IPA but still pretty tasty and easy to drink.

Pleasantly grassy and also kind of nutty. Dark, reddish brown as opposed to black. Moderate bitter, finishes with a lasting chocolate-fruit sweetness. Much sweeter than many examples. Also has a smoother feel too it. A most approachable version of a dark IPA. Nice charitable tie in too.

Pours almost pitch black with a finger of brown foam that coats the sides of the glass. Aroma is nicely hoppy, with grassy and earthy tones. First sip has a rush of plum sweetness quickly followed by a nice earthy hop flavor. Finishes bitter, but not tongue curling. There is substantial body and residual sweetness to this brew, which helps balance the hop flavor and bitterness quite nicely. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
