Served on cask at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of Floral and citrus hops and some caramel. The taste is bitter hops, bitter roasted malts, citrus, earthy notes and caramel. Medium bodied. CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - NOV 20, 2010
Pours a mostly opaque with a well-lacing clingy off-white head. Has a fresh resiny piny hop nose with some light caramel sweetness underneath. Starts with pretty good fullness and a nice light toasty maltiness with some nutty character and good fresh grapefruity hop flavor before a crisp bittersweet finish. A well-balanced and drinkable black IPA. ben4321 (6503) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - NOV 20, 2010

Aroma: The nose is toasty and roasted malts, earthy hops, and some citrus
Appearance: The pour is a muddy brown-black with a small tan head
Flavor: Flavor is balanced, has a good combination or roasted malts and hops
Palate: The body is somewhat thick, its medium-full bodied, but still drinks pretty smoothly
Overall, this is a solid black IPA. It isn’t anything spectacular, but its certainly worth trying. I always like these beers where they send the proceeds to charity, that is certainly always a good thing. Anyway, it is a solid beer, and worth buying at least once.
Firstly a disclaimer, I hate Black IPA with a passion. However.....the beer pours like a liquid black hole, light is literally absorbed. The nose is classic northwest hops, grapefruity citrus to the fore. That hoppiness continues in the drinking, backed with a slightly coffee like taste. Medium bodied and nice lacing. Not my kind of beer, but ticks all the boxes for this "style" of beer.

Draft sample. Poured clear black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt, earthy hop with a small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy dark bitter flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a very good complex beer.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2010 FOR THOSE IPA FANS WHO ARE STILL PUZZLED BY THIS BLACK IPA REVOLUTION LET ME TELL YOU THAT A BLACK IPA IS JUST AN IPA WITH ROASTED MALTS ADDED, WHICH MAKES THE BREW MUCH DARKER AND DELICIOUS. THIS ONE IS TERRIFIC, IT POURS BLACK WITH A THICK SLUDGY HEAD MAKING THE NAME FOR IT PERFECT. THE AROMA IS INCREDIBLY UNIQUE AND DELIGHTFUL IT REAKS OF PREMIUM DARK ROASTED COFFEE AND FINE RICH CHOCOLATE MIXED WITH TOP GRADE HOPS!! THE FLAVOR IS THAT OF BITTER SWEET HOPS LIKE THAT OF A GOOD IPA BALANCED WELL WITH ROASTED MALTS BITTER CHOCOLATE AND DARK COFFEE. AT 4.99 THIS BREW IS A STEAL AND IS MOST DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE BIRDS. Maverick34 (3238) - New York, USA - NOV 16, 2010
Draught from waterfront. Poured dark, some chocoalte notes, the hops are minimized. A decent black IPA but not the best. Chalsk (1104) - North Caldwell, New Jersey, USA - NOV 10, 2010
