COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles – you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge “Save the Buffleheads” Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

A: Dark Brown/Reddish Hue, Passes Mild Light, Off White Head, Some Lacing S: Mildly Roasted Chocolate Malts T: Piney, Roasted Chocolate Malts M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Bitter, Mildly Sticky Overall, I didnt have high expectations for this beer but it actually isnt bad, not over bearing on the malts or the hops, nice balance.

Dark brown with a large brown creamy head. Aroma of dark roasted malts, chocolate, multigrains and citrus. Taste of dark roasted malts, chocolate and citrus with a chocolaty finish that is somewhat bitter.

Pint-sized can from Tasty Beverage Co., Raleigh, NC. Dark brown pour with a frothy tan head. Cola-like sweet aroma at first with tangerine hops making their way through eventually. Citrusy hops are evident in the flavor and are certainly muted by cocoa and smoke from the malt. The mouthfeel is surprisingly thin for this style and certainly given the name. A decent black IPA.

Pours dark copper/amber with a frothy head. Aromas caramel, pine, citrus hops, light roasted malt and grass. Flavors citrusy, grassy, light caramel and some light roasted malt undertones. Medium sweet and medium bitter. Pretty decent. 16oz can.

ROGUE (2215) - Lewes, Delaware, USA - OCT 6, 2013
16oz can. Poured a very dark amber color with a one finger bubbly off white head. Coffee and roast are the dominant aromas with some sweet chocolate and piney hop notes also present. Taste has bitter coffee and roast up front with a huge piney hop presence. Some sweet cocoa and brown sugar notes help balance out the bitterness. Medium body with some sticky hop oils present, and light carbonation.

Not a big fan of black IPAs and this one might be bottom of the barrel. I would most likely pass on this one next time.

On tap at Bocktown Robinson. Nice black IPA. Nothing spectacular. Aroma was decent. Roasted malt with a green hoppy undertone. Pour was a nice deep dark brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was a little weak, but not bad. Roasted bitter malt with no sweetness doubles with the green leafy hop flavor. Light carbonation and a short wet finish.

$2.80 can from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours dark brown with a large beige head. I expected this to be more "sludge" like. Smells of pine and grapefruit. tastes of pine, grapefruit, cold coffee, soap, some spice... leftover stale coffee.

16 ounce can before softball, poured a dark brown color with aromas of coffee grounds, and light citrusy hops. Flavors are the same, earth, light coffee, and citrusy hops, nice beer overall.
