COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. Available only in draft and 22-ounce bottles – you can do more for the birds than drinking your share of Toxic Sludge, donate or buy a cool, limited edition BP Toxic Sludge “Save the Buffleheads” Tshirt: bptoxicsludge.com

Aroma - the aroma isn’t overly present. Sort of disappointing. What I did discern was hops of course, dark malts, and a little roast. Appearance - appearance is jet black, with a thin white head that dissipates and turn into a halo. The beer also has a lacing that follows down the glass. Taste - the taste has rich dark malts, and well balanced hops. Palate - the feel is medium in body, ranging from creamy to slick in feel. The finish is nicely bitter, not over the top.

Pint can: Aroma is big hops up front with spicy grapefruit note to it. Pours a clear blackish/ amber with a very thick off white head that lingers. Taste has got a nice hop texture with the candied texture I don’t like in some hops. Some light malt texture with some caramel malt notes. Palate is medium to high carbonation with a lingering hop note in the aftertaste. Overall, Pretty good. Cheers!

Bottle shared by ryandevilhorns at my beer tasting. Black pour with brown head. This was hoppy and roasty with a nice smooth finish. Pretty good black IPA.

Growler. Pours very dark garnet red, clear, with a 2-finger frothy/creamy light brown head. Aromas of cocoa and roasted malt, earthy notes (leaves, bark), some vanilla, coffee, and slightly sweet Tootsie Roll notes. Flavors of bitter roasty malt, sweet caramel, and mocha. Medium carbonation and body, with a dry finish. Easy-drinking; good. [932]

Not a big fan of black IPAs and this one might be bottom of the barrel. I would most likely pass on this one next time.

(Bottle). Pours a mahogany brown with thin tan lacing. Well-balanced black IPA hybrid at a reasonable price point. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Cloverleaf. The Black IPA phenomenom continues. Pours a dark amber brown color with an off white foam head. Has an aroma of caramel, roast, and citrus. Has a sweet smoky taste with a decent hop hit. Has a medium mouthfeel.

On tap @ Specific Gravity, Salisbury Md-Dark brown pour w/a moderate head. Burnt malt aroma. Started out w/a little bit of a stout flavor, some roasted malt/caramel, but that was soon overwelmed by a very bitter hop flavor. These two flavors just did not blend well for me, gave it a burnt malt flavor which I just didn’t enjoy. I enjoy a nice balanced IPA, even a Black IPA; this isn’t it. Long bitter, burnt finish.

Very deep and dark red hue with thick white lacing. Medium coffee nose that is pretty straight forward. The palate also has a nice creamy coffee aspect to it with a nice cascadian hop finish. Not as full bodied as other black IPAs. Almost a little bit to easy drinking.
