Appearance: Deep ruby color (almost black) with a foamy offwhite head.
Aroma: Almost no hops in the nose, and what hops are present meld into the background with malt roast. Mainly toffee and caramel malt sweetness present.
Taste: A little more hops than in the aroma, but not too much. There is almost a hybrid experience between the hops and the coffee notes from the malt. Definite caramel and toffee sweetness with burnt toast in the background. Blackcurrants present, too.
Mouthfeel: Nice and smooth. Drinks well, there’s a good, gentle carbonation present.
Overall: While this is a tasty beer, it doesn’t fit the description of a black IPA in my opinion. This tastes more like a red or a brown ale that has had some extra hops added for a bit of an extra bite.
March 31, 2013 - can as an extra from Dave. Brown pour with nice amount of head and spotty lacing. Aroma was roasted malt, caramel and piney hops. Very dark mahogony brown with a moderate light tan covering that reduces to edgework.
Nose is dank hops, light tropicals, grapefruit, earthy cocoa, pine.
Taste comprises light roast, cocoa powder, light metallic tang, hint of pine, grapefruit.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finale with subtle hop bitterness.
OK CDA but pretty middle of the road for the style.

Bomber from Liquor Loft. Brown pour with a red tint and large fluffy tan head. Aroma is a little sugary, toast and molasses. Taste is sharp bitter and flowers. Slight metallic vibe in finish. 10th anniversary for Blue Point, says the bottle cap. It has been a great decade for American beer. I am not a huge Blue Point fan, but I couldn’t resist buying something called Toxic Sludge. I like the concept too - some of the money you spend goes to protect birds. Dark brown pour with a burgeoning, bubbly crown. This is a dry, herby, astringent IPA. Hopefully it is not really toxic. It is not that sludgey either. This made me think of a new term - coffee IPA - not sure that has been used before. The hops reminded me of some German styles. Bottle. Decent brew. A good casue which might temper my review and put me on the generous side. Not a as well realized as i would like to see. Fairly "half done" with a definate lack of complexity. Nice nose with great malt sweetness and roast characteristics. Not as complex or as rich in the mouthfeel as i had hoped.
