Bluegrass Brewing Company has brewed a winter warming coffee stout using a Heine Brothers’ organic, fair trade coffee grown in Chiapas, Mexico. It will be available for purchase at Bluegrass Brewing Company on Friday, February 9th while supplies last. “I just tasted the stout - it has a wonderful balance between coffee and stout flavors,” said Bluegrass Brewing Company head brewer, Jerry Gnagy. Heine Brothers’ co-owner Mike Mays and head coffee roaster Todd Stanis collaborated with Gnagy to choose the Mexican coffee and give it a medium roast and a coarse grind to best bring out the flavor. “This Mexican coffee has a medium body and an almost chocolatey finish that will hold up well in such a hearty beer,” said Stanis. “Should be a perfect match.” This oatmeal stout is brewed with English roasted barley and caramunich malt which gives a roasty and slightly sweet malt flavor. The addition of flaked oats lends creaminess and body to this pitch black ale. The coffee will be added to the hot wort (unfermented beer) after boiling. This will extract good flavor without adding bitterness or burnt flavors. Freshly brewed coffee will also be added to the beer after fermentation is completed and the beer is ready to be served. This will give the freshest coffee flavor and aroma. (previously 6.5 % ABV)

750 ml bottle. Coffee is the dominating aroma and flavor. there is a nice creamy texture and flavor. The roasted malts are there and highlight the coffee. A nice smooth coffee stout.

received in trade; thanks dissapionted in this one - black pour with small head. decent aroma but it is of faint coffee; some alcohol. mouthfeel was thinner than I expected but ok; taste was the big let down here - just doesnt work; minimal to no roasted flavor; faint coffee flavor with an alcohol/astringent tone with some sweetness. doesnt work for me.

Poured into a snifter. 3.0 A: First pour yielded about half head. Fortunately the head fell quickly and the second pour filled my glass. Black color. Fizzy soda-pop head, which falls quickly and leaves no lacing behind. 3.5 S: Exceedingly dry with surprisingly low amounts of coffee. The roastiness and oatmeal comes through well along with chocolate. I like it. I would have given a higher score if it wasnt slightly acrid. 2.0 T: Oh boy, I see where the acrid part of the nose comes from. Exceedingly acrid day old stale coffee taste dominates giving a this beer a puckering aspect. This flavor is so strong that anything outside of general roastiness cannot be perceived. 2.0 M: Lighter medium to medium body. Despite constant swirling, I couldnt get the carbonation down to a reasonable level. Not particularly creamy and certainly not smooth. 1.5 D: I dont know why I gave this brewery another chance after being disappointed time and again by their products. Unfortunately, I bought two other BBC brews when I bought this. Hopefully they will be better. Avoid this at all costs. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-10-2011 22:11:40

750 ml bottle Thanks to Drfabulous. Used a pint. Small, thin beige head. Great roasted malt and coffee nose. Flavor of coffee beans, chocolate malts, brown sugar, caramel and a light grain. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a coffee mouthfeel. A very enjoyable lingering coffee roast in the finish. If you like this style, you will like this brew. No flaws and above average. Really glad I had a chance to try this! Thanks Jeff!

Poured from a 750ml bottle a dark black with little tan head. Aromas of roasted malt and coffee. Flavors are the same but huge coffee flavor and a real nice sipping beer to enjoy at night.

Very good coffee stout. I wish it came in a six pack. Not as good as the Bells Java Stout but still very respectable and available year round as well. A very good brew, one I have regularly.

Bottle @ Morten minus Peter smagning, Ulfborg. Pours black with a fluffy beige head and lacings. Coffee powder, grains and a bit of chocolate in the nose. Vaguely roasted flavor heavy dominated by the coffee with a scent of chocolate and oat in the back. Smooth and medium bodied with a quite lively carbonation which makes the body a bit thinner.
