A Belgian Dubbel, a style that originated in the monasteries in the Middle Ages. This beer is rich, malty and raisiny with a touch of caramel flavor. Being one of our bigger beers this should be enjoyed in moderation.

Bottle thanks to my Secret Santa. Pours with hazed brown body with a off-white head receding atop it. Aroma of brandy, chocolate, dark fruits, raisins, toffee, toasted barley. Taste is tobacco, raisins, metal, and chocolate. Fizzy mouthfeel. Not the best dubbel ever.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a deep amber bordering on brownish-red color with a one finger of just off white colored head. The head fades very fast leaving a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a somewhat grainy smell with notes of raisin mixed within. Along with these smells are big aromas spice smells of cardamom and clove. A light bit of a yeast and bubblegum smell and some roasted malt smells are there as well producing sweet but oddly grainy and lightly roasted aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with a bready and sweet taste with a lightly toasted malt and caramel flavor. A raisin and cheery sweetness comes to the tongue quickly after the initial taste with it bringing some yeast flavors. After the yeast comes to the tongue, so too does a moderately spiced flavor profile with clove, cardamom, and allspice all hitting the tongue. The spices and yeast remain relatively light and with a bit of more dark fruit flavors and a very light alcohol taste coming to the tongue at the end, one is left with a lightly spiced, bready, dark fruit flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. Both are rather decent for the brew highlighting the yeast, sweet, and darker fruit flavors of the brew without allowing any one flavor them to overwhelm the palate and all the while keeping it rather easy drinking.

Overall – A rather easy drinking dubbel overall. All in all it is pretty good, but is noting too outrageously good.

Poured from bottle. Aroma of roasted malt and caramel. Solid mahogany with tan head. Big malt flavor with brown sugar, honey, a hint of spice and maybe cocoa. Carbonation just right. Not overly sweet despite the flavors. Highly drinkable. Nicely done.

This poured an amber color with an off whit ehead. Aroma was of caramle, belgian yeast and not much else. Flavor was similar, sweet and lightly fruity but boring.

Bottle. Got from the Brass Rail out in Hershey. Brown caramel color. Aroma of caramel, belgium candy sugars, slight raisin. Its like a brown ale with a slight belgium spice note. Caramel and slight roasted malt. Light carbonation. Ok.

Draft at beer fest. Pours clear copper with minimal white head. The aroma has roasted chestnuts and brown sugar. The taste is light bitter nuts. Meh.

On tap. Pours a dark brown color with a huge fluffy off white head. Aroma of spices, candy notes, coriander, and chocolate. Taste of mild chocolate, dark fruit, spices, and candid sugar.

5000 (6862) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - APR 24, 2013
Bottle:   Deep caramel, a dark brown of sorts, moderate frothy sandy head, clingy lacing.   Musty nose, bready, slight fig/date.   Malty on the tongue, not as dark pitted fruit oriented as others, more like a heavy imperial amber.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel, and thankfully not cloying.   Backside shows more fruitiness, slightly salty.   Stale raisin like flavors linger.
