Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new lan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Appearance: dark maroon or mahogany, clear, pours with a thick dense light tan head Aroma: very sour, tart, Taste: cherry, hints of sweetness and warmth up front then it gets very sour, tart, interesting Palate: a bit of a thicker mouthfeel, lively carbonation, leaves a sour aftertaste Overall: really impressed, the darker beer coupled with an intense sourness is pretty unique, recommended ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Wasn't expecting to like this. I did. Dark cherry amber pour. Cherry and fruity sourflavors. A lot going on in a low ABV beer

24.03.2014, tap (as VanderGhinste Oud Bruin) @ Crowbar:
Small creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet sour-ish, caramel, sour winegum, grass, butterscotch, sour apples, soda powder, hints of paint. Taste is slightly sour-ish fruity, sour winegum, sour apples, sorrel, soda powder, butterscotch, caramel malts grass. Little bitterness, kind of a metallic mouthfeel. Fair enough.

Aroma is fruit, dark fruit/grapes and a good hint of sourness. The flavor is grapes/dark fruit, malts, berries, a hint of earthiness and a mild/medium sour finish.

Bottle poured into snifter. Dark ruby with finger of off white head. Smells slightly of fruit and malt. Tastes like cherry up front, then vinegar like taste kicks in, pretty tart. Also malt but not a whole lot. Palate is kind of light and easy drinking like juice. First sour and not so bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2015 Rerating, a year later, this time on draft at the Seattle IBF. Pours a reddish brown color with a thin foam ring head. Not nearly as sour as I remember it. More sweet, with a grape juice like flavor. Sweet and sour berry and grape finish. Very tasty.
