Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new lan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

250ml bottle pours a deep amber brown colour with a finger of light tan head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark pitted fruits with some hints of red wine grapes and oaked notes. Taste is a dark fruit and malty sweetness with a spicy hop bitterness and a dry oaked red wine dryness. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a nice sour ale that is well balanced and tasty. Recommended.

Pours dark red with thin beige foam. Very sour nose with dried fruit, cherry and some earthiness. The flavor is a little more mild, but a good combination of sour notes with some woodiness. Thin body and finishes dry. The flavor was more delicate than I expected, bringing out the lambic aspect as much as the bruin.

250ml bottle. Milky chestnut colour with small to average, frothy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Sourish, spicy aroma, hints of vinegar, a touch of balsamico, sour raspberry, Taste is slightly dry, sweet-and-sour, tangy, hints of cherry, morello, raspberry, a caramel and nutty touch, hints of rock sugar, mild vinegar.

250ml bottle from Legacy. BB 14-12-2017. ABV 5.5%. Pours a very dark copper with a weak tan head. Aroma is winey, cherry, some bready notes. Taste is winey, fermented cherry, oak notes. Quite high carbonation. Winey, fermented berries aftertaste with oak and bready notes, slight bitterness. Good one.

Visual: Pours clear light root beer brown with a bit of a dissipating head, medium ringed retention, mixed fast and steady active streams.

Nose: sour pukey, cherry notes, malty backbone. (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: crisp-fizzy, incoming sour

Mid-palate: tingly CO2, med-high puckery sour, light pukey cherry-prune, (lvl-7-sweetness), woody brown sugar barley malt

Finish: lingering dissipating acidity, residual fruity cloying sweetness, palate roughness

Summary: Big sourness right from the get go, balanced well with fruity but cloying sweetness and woody oaked malts. The sugars become heavy about halfway through, but its still a quality brew with history. A good flemish, not as good as Duchesse de Bourgogne FWIR [B+].

Nice aroma of cherries, hints of vinegar. Appearance nice dark red color with small to non existent head. Taste. Wow nice sour notes hints of cherries, oak and vinegar. Sits really well on the palate. Overall a very good sour beer from Flanders.
