Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

This is a more of a mellow Flanders than I like or am used to. Still enjoying this one. Mild aroma of wood, sour cherry and funky cheese stuff, vinegar. Tastier as it warms but I know this will change in a less enjoyably sharp way if I let it sit too long. Vinegar, tartness, fruits, dark caramel, wood. Enmjoyable and mellow overall. I’m way to used to crushing pints of The Duchesse while slaying the pinball world.

07.12.2016 - Aroma of nice lambik and sugar sweet dark ale. Woody notes. Taste is pleasant sour but the "hint of sweetness" is way to artificial like bad aspartam-radler. Maybe this would be a great dry flemish brown without the sweetener.

12 ounce bottle from Artale in Rockford, IL, served at cellar temp in a Leffe glass. Murky reddish brown, just a hint of translucence, smallish light tan head diminishes to a small ring quickly...typical sour apple-cherry nose, hint of barnyard manure and moldy hay as well, perhaps a touch of port - fairly nice but on the slight side...on the tongue it’s got a bit of sugary sweetness, like sweetened cherry juice, and though the tartness does come into play quickly, it remains sweeter and more artificial in it’s flavor profile than I’d want...finishing a little drier, with a touch of woody-oaky character...medium-bodied, fizzy carbonation gives a feel to it not unlike Coke or Dr. Pepper. This is all right I guess but certainly below average for the style to my taste and rather too expensive for what it is.

Label says sour red brown. Like a Flemish brown to me. Pours a dark brown, sweet, roast malt, cherry, fruit. Muted sour all the way through.

Bouteille 33 cl - couleur brune foncé tel du café, odeur sur les fruits rouges, la mûr, goût direct sur l’acidité, puis sur les murs, caramel dur, fin sur l’acidité qui est beaucoup trop présente tout le long de la dégustation

250ml bottle pours a deep amber brown colour with a finger of light tan head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark pitted fruits with some hints of red wine grapes and oaked notes. Taste is a dark fruit and malty sweetness with a spicy hop bitterness and a dry oaked red wine dryness. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a nice sour ale that is well balanced and tasty. Recommended.
