Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new lan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin". The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

I was very surprised the first time I had this. It is a great oud bruin, that far exceeded my expectations. It is some what similar to Duchesse de Bourgogne, but less sweet than the recent release. Perhaps not as complex as some other examples of the style, but very well rounded and extremely morish. Well worth giving a go if your a fan of oud bruins.

Bottle bought in Belgium. Pours dark brown/red with a tiny cream head.Nose is sour with lots of balsamic vinegar. Taste is fizzy in the mouth with quite a lot of flavours going on. Sour but with a slightly sweet finish.

Bue la Runion avec crpe andouillette patate sauce moutarde. Brune lger reflets rougetres. Pas de mousse, carbo moyenne. Boise on sent quelle a mrie en ft. Trs acide, trop mon got mais normal pour une sour. Limpression de cerise qui revient.

Clear, filtered, chestnut-mahogany body topped by a beige head that is medium-sized and recedes steadily to cover/ring.
Earthy malts with soft wood-like character, bits of acetic acid and a strong, pervasive cherry-like ester comprise the aroma, which is very clean, polished and light on the vinegar character. Nicely aged/developed and of course not feeling anything like the new-age American sours. Still, theres a general sterility to it that I can never get past stemming from the filtration and all-around high production of the beer. No alcohol or flaw.
Lightly juicy vinegar, raisin and cherry notes are all backed by lightly sweet malts adding light caramel, bread and earthy qualities. Soft wood in the flavor but it doesnt seem to come through in texture. Medium-light bodied with brisk, peppery, forced carbonation. Sourness is pretty low and there is no flaw or alcohol. Clean, straightforward and a good example of the style, I suppose, but Ill just never be fully happy with a filtered Belgian beer.

Bottle. Pours mahogany brown with ruby highlights. Moderate long lasting off-white head. Aroma: moderate acetic sourness, caramel, esters, minor spicy phenols. Light body. The flavour is dry and tart. Noble fruity medium sourness. Balancing caramel. Light yeastiness. Very low bitterness. Good and classic.

Being new to trying sours, I found this one just the right blend. It was mildly sour, vibrantly fruity, and easily drinkable. It is one of the favorites at a place in Santa Cruz, CA. called "Pour- the tap room"

Svag, ngot vins doft med en elegant trtouch. Mycket mrkt rd. Ttt bra skum. Stsur smak och mycket drickvnligt. Moreller, druvor. Tunn kropp. Fruktig och fuktig(!) eftersmak.
