The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

wonderful. It is perfect to me. Not too sour, cherries, slightly creamy. Leaves a slight tart on the palate I love this one and my previous favorite was the Panil sour. This one is mellower and finishes very clean. I would drink 20 of these if I could. I’ll buy this little beer every chance I can get. Cherry and a smooth light lemon hop that stays behind the cherry. Slightly sweet even. So good you want to down it but so good you have to stop and savour and roll it on your tongue for a while.

Bottle at Amundsen, march 26th 2013. Clear mahogny body, no head. Aroma of wood, malt, red fruits. Malty and acidic taste with fruits and cherry, chocolate, a rather high sweetness softens the sourness a bit. Finishes with cherries and chocolate. An interesting beer.

For the $$$ you cannot beat this beer if you like big viniger sours with a deep complex flavor. I buy a case of this for $118 every 4 months or so. What a great beer

Cheers Joe. Mahogany pour with a frothy white gead. Sour, cherry fruit aroma. Little hint of roastiness. Sour bitterness with a pleasant refreshing finish. Sickly sweet. Just not my style.

(330mL bottle from the LCBO) Poured a sort of pale mahogany, clear with ruby highlights and a tiny whitish head. Aroma acidic, sharp, sour cherry, balsamic vinegar, barnyard, some sweet fruit lingering along with overtones of lemon and wood, pretty complex. Flavour quite sour with some caramel malt sweetness coming through later to accompany a tart finish. Sour cherry, green apple, grain, lemon, some yeasty earthiness, faintly woody. That sour/sweet/tart finishing sensation lingers, but not a ton of flavour lingers with it. This is quite a nice sour overall, fairly low carbonation and an oily texture. A bit more barrel character would be nice given its extensive ageing.

330 ml bottle from LCBO, served cold in a tulip glass. BB 06 02 15.

App.: Deep mahogany with a modest tan head. Aroma: Lots of tart cherries, some oakiness, a bit of barnyard/funk/wild, earthy brightness, some sweeter cherry/fruit notes, pretty nice for the style. Palate: Medium body, gentle effervescence, slightly puckering and astringent. Flav.: Lots of rich and tart cherries, some darker malt notes too, a bit woodsy/oaky, a little earthy, nice; dry with fairly assertive tartness and a long, fruity finish balanced by some nice deep malt notes.

I like this style and I think this beer is a pretty good example.

Sweet and sour is a good way to describe the nose on this one, quite a bit of the barnyard type sour notes and a candy like sweetness. Clear dark beatiful dark ruby color, fairly quickly fading white head. Caramel sweetness comes through as expected on the nose first, followed by some green apple tartness and a lemony sweet finish. Not overly complex and a bit too sweet for my liking, but clean flavors make this one still great. Medium bodied and average carbonation.

330ml bottle. Dark amber body, medium yellow head with good retention. Aroma of yeast, sour cherry, herbal hops, spicy and some woody notes. Taste is extremely sour, watercress, sour cherry, herbs, green apples, yeast and a touch of caramel. Extreme experience.

Pours a clean copper (seems deep amber sometimes) colour with a big off-white head that goes down slowly and leaves a bit of lace. A nice thin coat tops the brew. Sour nose with hints of cherries, earth and wind going through a farm. The mouthfeel is very, very sour with a little tart in the finish. Sour taste. feels like eating rhubarb, with notes of mild caramel in the background, cereal grain, cherries and other wild berries. Not getting much from the oak barrels.

It pours ruby with mahogany highlights; the head is tan and foamy. The aroma has notes of: pungent acute barnyard funk, lemon-juice, toffee, hay, and sour berry. The taste is very-heavy sour and medium sweet and high acidity; there are notes of: lemon-juice, sour berries, toffee, and red-fruit jam. The palate is full-bodied, has light carbonation, and really long sour and sticky finish. Overall, it’s extreme pungency is a welcomed change from more subdued sour beers.
