Undated bottle. Clear copper with a moderate tan head of some retention. Initial aroma impression is cara malt (lightly oxidized), wet dog hair, faint sweat, burnt honey, faint butter. Medium bodied, caramel-y burnt pancake batter with maple syrup, scorched toffee. Quick and short finish, low bitterness, moderate sweetness, starchy and simple with some low volume flaws.

Eigentlich ein schönes fränkisches Dunkel, allerdings für meinen Geschmack etwas zu säuerlich und nicht malzig genug. Insgesamt auch etwas zu wässrig.

Rated Nov 2011. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is dark amber-brown. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread, caramel), with hints of smoke and gum. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Not very characterful, but acceptable.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2011 Bottle, best before Mar. 8, 2012, Sampled mid-Nov.: Rusty orange. Off-white halo encircles the scattered foam. Rustic dry malt nose of sassafras and breadcrust. Candyish and fruitcakey, as well. Some pleasant aromatics, but fairly dull. Stiff carbonation, leaning toward fizzy. Frail body. Mild fruity twang upfront, with a pleasant note of woody malt contrasting with heartier melanoidins and a suggestion of demerara sugar. Teasing licorice-tinged hop bite is mostly obscured by a light metallic tickle. Pleasant vanilla-cookie malt along with a springy nuttiness and some cakey heft adding to the sweetness, but there’s ample dryness to counterbalance. Dab of cola hinders the malt definition as it lends a bit of fuzz to the body. Slippery finish is comprised of jelly candy and brown sugar but also a very appealing punctuation of dusty yeast and woody malt rusticity. Overall, not quite as clean as I prefer as it is on the sweet side, though the malt does sport some good structure and its character is fairly rustic. Certainly has some potential, but ultimately a mixed bag, as is.

Bottle, from trade with Maria. A crystal clear, dark amber beer with a small, light beige head. Toffee, borderline butterscotch, light roasted malts, candy notes and some dried fruits on the aroma. Rather dry on the palate, with a pleasant bitterness finishing it. Caramel, roasted malts, butterscotch notes and raisins too. Medium body and pleasant carbonation. A quite decent one, although a bit buttery. 110722
